CANYONS DEBUT WASN'T OFFENSIVE, AS WAS EXPECTED; YOUNG BASEBALL TEAM GOES 1-3.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Daily News Staff Writer

The College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  baseball team played as expected in its first games of the season. It went 1-3 in last weekend's South Bay Tournament.

Whatever power the Cougars possess came to play, with first baseman Chris Coach and outfielder Sergio Franco contributing a home run apiece. Problem: there wasn't much more in the way of extra-base hits ex·tra-base hit

With the exception of five doubles (two by Franco) in its 9-3 loss to L.A. Harbor, one of the top teams in the state, there were only two extra-base hits in COC's other three games. They came in the form of doubles off the bats of catcher Cory Briggs and first baseman Ryan McKnight.

``We lost to three really good programs at their yards,'' Canyons coach Len Mohney said, referring to a 13-3 loss to Santa Ana Santa Ana, city, El Salvador

and a 4-2 loss to Cerritos in addition to L.A. Harbor. ``Our offense wasn't good. We knew that was a concern.''

The pitchers were solid, Mohney said, as expected. Saugus High graduate Steve Lane threw 7-2/3 innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. The Cougars are young, with 27 freshmen on their roster of 36.

, El Nino: The Canyons baseball team hosts its fifth-annual tournament with games beginning on Thursday and concluding on Saturday.

The term ``annual'' was used loosely here, as the tournament was rained out last year.

``El Nino won last year,'' Mohney joked.

Canyons went 4-0 in its tournament in 1997, but because it is a round-robin format, a clear winner cannot be determined.

``I might want to go back to double-elimination,'' Mohney said. ``I know (round robin) guarantees four games, but I thought double-elimination brought out more competition.''

Looking up: After dropping its first four Western State Conference games, the College of the Canyons men's basketball team has won its last two.

Canyons beat West L.A. 58-46 last Wednesday and Glendale 77-68 on Saturday.

Perhaps as surprising as COC's 0-4 start in conference play was the victory at Glendale, which had beaten Canyons 89-60 at COC See chip on chip.  on Jan. 20.

``They might have taken us a little lightly after beating us so badly at our place,'' Canyons coach Lee Smelser said. ``I felt they were not as mentally prepared as they were the first time around.''

Point guard Eurskine Robinson and shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  Charles Madison led the way against Glendale. Robinson had 19 points and 10 assists while Madison added 25 points. They scored 16 points apiece in the second half. Forward Sam Harris Sam Harris may refer to:

 had 14 rebounds.

Playoff picture: With only four games left, including tonight's game against L.A. Valley, the men's basketball team needs as many wins as possible to be assured of a playoff spot.

``We're just hoping for some big wins in these next four games to go into the playoffs,'' Smelser said. ``I think it would be (disappointing to miss the playoffs). We have one of the toughest leagues - a lot tougher than some of the ones that will be sending other teams to the playoffs.''

Busy as a bee: The Canyons baseball team had five games scheduled in a four-day span through Saturday. Being that the home opener against Moorpark was rained out Wednesday, COC will only have to play four games from Thursday through Saturday in its tournament.

The Moorpark game has yet to be rescheduled.
