CANYONS CANNONS : BEHIND THEIR FEARSOME HITTING, COUGARS EXPECTED TO REPEAT AS WSC DIVISION CHAMPS - DESPITE PITCHING QUESTIONS.

Byline: Dave Desmond Daily News Staff Writer

Start feeling sorry for the pitchers in the Western State Conference. If anyone has an ERA below 4.00 this season, they'll deserve unanimous all-conference recognition.

Its first director was Oveta Culp Hobby.  - as in high scoring,'' College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. ``We're really going to be able to send up nine seriously tough outs,'' Mohney said.

All-Western State Conference infielders Kasey Canale and Luis Sanchez Luis Sanchez or Luis Sánchez can refer to various people:

, as well as all-conference outfielder Jeremy Seipel, return from last season's 25-15 team that won the division title with a 20-6 mark.

Sophomore outfielder Rob Rehfeld has impressive speed and should serve as an offensive catalyst from the leadoff spot.

The Cougars' only questions come on the mound, where All-WSC pitcher Chris Baker's academic ineligibility leaves a gaping hole.

Jim McNeel, a talented transfer from Lamar who also plays infield, will get a chance to pitch. So will former Canyon High standout Rick Engbrecht.

But don't count on many 2-1 games. And buckle up. It could be a wild ride.

A look at the other local JC and small colleges:

Pierce: The Brahmas will try to stay close to WSC favorites Canyons and Bakersfield.

All-WSC right-hander Harry Kenoi (6-foot-2, 240 pounds) had 11 saves last year, but will move to the rotation and join sophomores Josh Morgan (4-2) and Josh Goldberg (4-1).

Valley: The Monarchs (16-24, 12-14) are young. The battery of second-team All-WSC pitcher Taiki Yamaoka (3.36 ERA) and catcher Mike Wertz (.281) return, but the remainder of the starting lineup could consist of freshmen.

With experience, the outfield of Steve Guerrero (Poly), Ed Jung (L.A. Baptist) and Brad Farlow (Crespi) could develop into one of the WSC's most potent. Catcher Casey Roth (Cleveland) and pitcher Kyle Leonard (Sacramento) also could be significant contributors.

First baseman Brett Niles returns from a .340 season and sophomore pitchers Jared Sandler and Joe Baldino should be the foundation of a solid pitching staff.

Mission: The Free Spirit figures to be improved over last season's 6-21 effort, but may have a way to go to catch the conference's elite teams.

Catcher Kevin Serr and outfielder Jaime Cerna head a list of eight returners who should give Mission experience and leadership.

Antelope Valley: All-Foothill Conference third baseman David Nichols batted .385 last season for the Marauders, who finished 6-29.

Antelope Valley will lean on pitchers Dan O'Gara (Paraclete) and Azaham Rodarte (Winters, Calif.), as well as freshmen David Place (outfield) and Charlie Cooke (first base), both from Antelope Valley High.

Senior outfielder Richard Holmes batted .320 last season and sophomore outfielder Eric Buben earned All-SCIAC honors after hitting .355 with four home runs in conference.

Pitchers Richard Bell (11-3, 2.92) and Erik Kiszczak (9-3, 4.02) should again anchor the pitching staff.

The Master's: Only three starters return for first-year coach Monte Brooks. Danny Cato batted .282 and stole 14 bases in 15 attempts for the Mustangs (14-20-2, 11-11-1), whose 1996 season was cut short when several teammates were removed from the team for breaking school rules.

Senior transfer Heath McElwee could add some punch to the lineup.
