CANYONS' FISHMAN HAS HIS BEST OUTING YET; PITCHER RUNS AGAIN AFTER BACK SURGERY.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Daily News Staff Writer

Despite COC See chip on chip.  baseball's poor start, Monday was a good day for pitcher Shaun Fishman. For the first time since June 1998, Fishman ran around the baseball field.

The freshman is making a remarkable recovery from back surgery, needed to remove part of a disc that was pinching a nerve.

``I was supposed to take one to 1-1/2 years off from running,'' he said. ``I've healed so quickly that the doctor said it was OK. I feel brand new. I need to get all of my flexibility back, but I'm getting bigger and stronger every day.''

Fishman has had two appearances for COC this year. He went one inning each time, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out three.

His modest numbers while he is still rehabilitating are a far cry from what Fishman is used to. As a force on El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Most of the time Fishman was playing during his senior year, he was on painkillers to deal with the pain in his legs from the pinched nerve.

``It helped me pitch, but I couldn't hit as well,'' he said. ``The adrenaline adrenaline (ədrĕn`əlĭn, –lēn): see epinephrine.  took the rest of the pain away.''

His leg would become sore a day after pitching and he thought it was his hamstring. Then, the MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

. Then, the surgery.

``I had the operation to play baseball,'' said Fishman, who had taken off the spring semester of 1998 and worked for a collection agency before having the surgery.

``It's his competitive nature,'' coach Len Mohney said. ``He's always been on a winner.''

The one thing he is not going to do is dwell on whatever impact the surgery had, is having, and will have on his life.

He has already felt are a loss in velocity. He used to throw around 88 mph and, although he hasn't clocked himself recently, he said he thinks he is currently down to the low- to mid-80s.

``I just look to deal with what happened and get better,'' he said. ``It wasn't in my control, so I can't stay bitter about it.''
