CANYONS' STOCK IS RISING; COUGARS TRY TO AVOID LETDOWN VS. SANTA BARBARA.Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer Seven weeks ago, they were just a young group of football players, excited about bringing the sport back to College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. after 17 years. They were hopeful they could finish with a winning record and prove it was a good idea to bring back the sport. They had not played a game yet, so all they had were their dreams. Now, six games completed, things have come full reverse. The Cougars have gone from a first-year program to a powerhouse. They're 5-1 and, after pulling the upset of the year last week by beating Allan Hancock, ranked sixth in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. So this week during practice, Lyon read newspaper accounts of Cal State Northridge's loss to Sacramento State. Northridge was the sudden darling, having beaten Montana to sit atop the Big Sky Conference. The Matadors also earned its first Division I-AA national ranking. Then they went out and lost to the Hornets, who have been the conference's doormats for much of this decade. ``You're right where Northridge was,'' Lyon told his players. ``With success comes responsibility. When you do well, people notice. Can you live up to the responsibility? Can you live with your success? You are no longer a first-year program everybody takes lightly.'' The players seem serious about maintaining the success. Lyon regularly meets with a six-player executive council, which acts as a liason between the coaches and the players. Lyon allows them to speak freely and without penalty. What they told him this week was: The team is tired. Since their bye week isn't until Nov. 21 - after their final game - there's no time to rest. So Lyon shortened practices. Tuesday's and Wednesday's sessions were half an hour shorter, and Thursday's practice was just 1-1/2 hours. ``I see the fatigue,'' Lyon said. Playing five games down to the last minute also has taken an emotional toll, and that's one thing Canyons must watch. Although Santa Barbara's offense doesn't appear to be as strong as others (it has scored just 26 points this season), a tired Cougars team might make Santa Barbara look good and build up the Vaqueros' confidence. More likely, Canyons will go for the quick strike and give everybody an easy week, but it has to watch out for Santa Barbara's pass defense. Defensive end Govi Covin COVIN, fraud.
