CANYON TOURNAMEMT: ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR NELSEN IN CANYON'S VICTORY OVER A.V.

Matt Nelsen always has the green light from his Canyon High teammates and first-year coach Chad Phillips to bomb away.

Nelsen scored 22 points, including 18 in the second half after 6-5 senior center Brian Waite left the game with a sprained right ankle in the third quarter of the pool-play game.

``He finally got confidence in his shot,'' junior guard Chad Eichten said about Nelsen. ``He is our shooter, so we keep on telling him to keep on shooting. If he goes 0 for 20, we'll keep telling him to shoot.''

Nelsen made 9 of 14 shots and 4 of 6 from 3-point range. He was only 2 of 5 in the first half but 7 of 9 after halftime to propel the Cowboys into championship pool play against Valencia at 7 p.m. Friday.

Granada Hills (2-4) scored the first six points of the second half to climb within nine, 31-22. The Knights responded with 17 of the final 20 points of the third quarter.
