CANYON LOOKING TO SEASON.Byline: GERRY GITTELSON The helmets and pads come on this week, and here are the pressing issues heading into the 2006 high school football season: Does Canyon have the guns to repeat? The Cowboys (13-1 in 2005) are coming off a spectacular season, finishing as the Southern Section Div. II champion by defeating rival Hart 21-13 in the final. Running back J.J. DiLuigi, who scored 43 touchdowns, is back, along with a group of talented, physical blockers such as Nick Madia, Nick Peterson, A.J. Wallerstein and three-year starter Marc Valdez. And new quarterback Ben Longshore long·shore adj. Occurring, living, or working along a seacoast. [Short for alongshore.] should be solid, based on a successful summer passing campaign. The offense should be OK, but the defense will set Canyon apart. Last year, Canyon allowed just 13 points per game -- 12 fewer than the previous two seasons -- and key hitters Matt Brown, Tyler Hawkins and Garrett Leary have graduated. So Canyon's new defense will be the telling point. Canyon always scores plenty of touchdowns. If the Cowboys can stop other teams from scoring, they should win the league title.
