CANYON JUST EXCITED TO PLAY FOOTBALL TEAM TAKES ON CHAMINADE AFTER FIRE CANCELED GAME.

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON Staff Writer

CANYON COUNTRY -- Perhaps no team is more eager than Canyon High to play football following the cancellation of last week's game at Lancaster High because of ambient smoke from the Day Fire -- and the bewildering be·wil·der

It has been a long two weeks for a Canyon team that began the season ranked No. 2 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports but has lost two in a row heading into tonight's 7 p.m. nonleague matchup against visiting Chaminade (3-0) of West Hills.

``This week has moved along slowly for all us,'' offensive lineman Marc Valdez said. ``Believe me, it feels good just to be playing a game again, and we're happy to be doing that.''

After all the finger-pointing this week -- Canyon's coaches have publicly blamed Principal Bob Messina for not fixing the problem, while Lancaster coach Jeff Cortez said Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. After opening against three opponents who all advanced to a Southern Section final last year, defending DivisionII champion Canyon (1-2) figured to have a relatively easy time at Lancaster. It was a game that many of Canyon's reserves had looked forward to because they finally would see some game action.

``It feels good. We're just happy to play again,'' receiver Kenny Suber said. ``We thought we'd be playing last Saturday but instead started reviewing for Chaminade and getting ready for the next game. We're excited to play. We can't wait.''

Hart, which has won eight section titles, committed five turnovers in a one-point loss at Westlake last week, and seven turnovers in a opening loss to St. Bonaventure of Ventura.

``We've had a week to think over that loss to Westlake, and now it's time to play some real Hart football,'' WR/DB Brandon Arndt said. ``We can't fumble and beat decent teams, so we're focusing on the basics and not making stupid mistakes.''

Hart's Alex Pettee has passed for 1,077 yards and five TDs, and Delano Howell has rushed for 362 yards, caught 18 passes and scored 10 TDs, including a 95-yard KOR.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Graham Wilbert, QB, Valencia: After stellar performances in Valencia's first three games, Wilbert completed just 2 of 13 for 25 yards and an INT last week in a 30-point loss to Orange Lutheran.

OUTLOOK: Coming off its second-worst loss in program history, Valencia looks to get back on track against another difficult opponent.

Valencia has its work cut out, and the Vikings must be more consistent if they want to keep pace once Foothill competition begins in two weeks. Wilbert (1,059 yards, 11 TDs) and RB Shane Vereen (251 yards, 16 receptions, 11 TDs) carry most of the offensive load for Valencia. LB Keith Klemens is a key hitter.

St. John Bosco's Erich Klemme has six sacks over the past two games. RB Lawrence Doss (277 yards, 7.7 avg., five TDs) is a dangerous breakaway threat who's averaging 62 yards per kick return, including a 98-yard TD.

It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  last week -- one of the few wins over an elite opponent in coach Jason Bornn's four-year career -- but the Centurions face an even stiffer challenge against Notre Dame, which has won 38 of its past 39 games, including three successive Div. III titles through 2004.

``Everything is rolling, and we're just going to do our normal routine and play how we play,'' Bornn said.

In the victory over Chino, Nick Gauthier completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and two TDs, and he also rushed for 48 yards. Saugus' other top players are RB Ryan Zirbel, OL Ramsen Golpashin, LBs Justin and Ryan McKillop and DB Mario Wright.

Notre Dame is without QB Dayne Crist (back), but replacement Shane Horton (158 yards passing, 200 yards rushing) has looked sharp. OLs Sam DeMartinis and Charlie Charmichael and PK Erik Folk (three FGs) are top-notch.
