Canyon High School's girls' cross country season came to a close over the weekend when the Cowboys cowboys, in American history. 1 Tory marauders, adherents to the British cause in the American Revolution, who fought in the contested area of Westchester co., N.Y. finished sixth in the Division II race during the Southern Section finals at Mount San Antonio Mount San Antonio, better known to most in Los Angeles as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California, USA and the highest point in Los Angeles County. Division II turned out to be tougher this year and was loaded with quality teams. Yucaipa, which defended its Division II title and is the defending state champ, is considered to be among the best three teams in the country. Had Canyon stayed in Division I and if the Cowboys would have run exactly as they did Saturday they would have qualified for the state meet by one point. Also, Fleshman would have won the individual title. ``Division II was one of those divisions where teams came on strong at the end,'' Canyon coach Dave Delong said. ``We got killed by some Division I schools earlier in the year and that was one reason we stayed down. (But) Division II is where we belong.'' Although Canyon had been moved down Delong still had the option to move his team up, but he had to make that decision during the three weeks at the beginning of the season. The division in which a team is placed is based on the size of the school. Canyon's enrollment size fits Division II enrollment standards - a school has the option to move up but can't move down. It took a lot of hard work for Canyon to reach last year's level. The Cowboys had graduated four key members of last year's team but had hoped to rely heavily on Fleshman, senior Julie Harris Julie Harris (born December 2, 1925) is a distinguished American stage, screen, and television actress. But the freshman never ran a race for Canyon, transferring to another school and soon after Plasschaert quit running for personal reasons. ``There were just too many losses for us to overcome,'' Delong said. ``(And) last year they didn't feel any pressure. Because of the depth we had (last year) we didn't always have to run our best race. There was very little pressure (last year).'' Despite the setbacks Canyon responded well, winning several quality invitationals throughout the season. Delong will have four of his top seven runners returning next year, including freshman Erin White Erin White (born October 27, 1977 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a Canadian softball first baseman. It is disappointing. (The state meet) was one of our goals. It's such a special experience.''
