CANYON HIGH 10TH IN BRAIN COMPETITION LOCAL STUDENTS DO WELL IN COUNTY.

Byline: Sue Doyle Staff Writer

MONTEBELLO - It was a good day for Academic Decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events.  teams from Golden Valley, Saugus and Lancaster high schools Lancaster High School may refer to:

Thursday when results from the mega-size battle of the brains were announced.

But it was an even better day for Canyon High, which toppled its local rivals by placing 10th out of the 43 public high schools competing in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Academic Decathlon.

The new Golden Valley High trailed closely behind, shaking up the competition by coming 13th. Saugus High was 26th. Lancaster High scored last. Results were announced Thursday at an afternoon banquet in Montebello.

Jubilation filled the air for Canyon students who had also aimed to beat their score from last year when the team placed 13th in the countywide competition.

``We exceeded expectations based on our early scores,'' said Dennis Lynch, a Canyon history teacher and Academic Decathlon coach. ``I was pleased we finished in the top 10.''

Students prepare year-round for the annual event and usually have an elective Academic Decathlon class mixed into their school schedules. Teens dig deeply into 10 subjects that they're tested on during the competition and typically meet weekends, holidays and after school to master them.

The European Renaissance, this year's competition theme, had the young scholars buried in facts from the Sistine Chapel Sistine Chapel (sĭs`tēn) [for Sixtus IV], private chapel of the popes in Rome, one of the principal glories of the Vatican. Built (1473) under Pope Sixtus IV, it is famous for its decorations.  to the scientific revolution.

After a year of studying, students on Jan. 28, the first day of the competition, wrote essays, gave speeches and were interviewed by judges.

They returned last Saturday for a day of tests in math, economics, science, language and literature, music and art. Following exams, students headed over to the oral super quiz where they answered 10 questions live before an audience.

Students score points for each of the 10 subjects they're tested on. The top six individual scores for each team are then tallied, providing school ranking.

Typically Academic Decathlon teams are dominated with seniors who have worked their way through years of Academic Placement classes and then bring that expertise to the team. But there are no seniors at Golden Valley yet, because the campus opened just two years ago.

``We're very happy that, with such a challenging field of schools, to come in the top 15 was awesome. There's a lot of potential for next year as well,'' said Dana Bobek, who teaches foods at Golden Valley High and coached this year's team.

Students also won medals for bringing home the highest score on their teams. Cory Cunningham was awarded with the high honor for Canyon High School Canyon High School can refer to:

. The senior, who had the highest score for the school last year, raised the bar for himself this year.

The payoff?

His score went up by 500 points.

``Since I did it last year, I had more of an idea of what to do this year, and I made a goal,'' he said. ``So as I studied through the year, I kept that in mind. ''

Junior Katrina Blanchard scored highest among her peers at Golden Valley.
