CANYON HIGH'S NEWEST EDITION ADDITION DRIVEN TO SUCCEED.

work, and tried to implement what was successful. He was very serious about it.

After 36 holes, Humphreys emerged with a one-stroke victory.

Fast forward to Monday Monday: see week. , the first day as Canyon's newest coach.

Although this is his first head job, after having served as an assistant coach for three years at The Master's College and for one season at Hart, the excitement that might have been expected was absent from Humphreys' face and voice.

As far as the 25-year-old Humphreys is concerned, getting a high school head basketball coaching job is what he's he's

been after for more than 10 years. That, even though he's heard from Master's faculty, Hart parents and his in-laws that he's too young for this job.

``It's been in my blood for all my life,'' he said before Monday's first practice. ``I knew that was the profession I wanted to go in. It's not a matter of excitement. It's just a matter of getting the job done.''

From his father, Paul, who coached him at Dade Christian High School Christian High School, also known as CHS, is in O'Fallon, Missouri. The school mascot is the Eagle and the school colors are teal and black. Their women's soccer team has won many state championships.  in Miami, to his coaches at Master's to Hart's Mike May, Humphreys has been gaining knowledge and experience for when this day came.

``He went to every camp, every tournament, every pick-up game. He had that drive that very few kids had,'' Paul Humphreys Paul Humphreys (born Paul David Humphreys, 27 February 1960, in London) is a British musician. Life and career

said by telephone from his home. ``I knew he's be a better coach than I ever was because of his drive.''

It started in high school. Paul Humphreys would bring home video of the game, and his son would watch it five or six times, studying his every move. After he'd find a mistake, he'd go out and practice that mistake away.

``His desire was to be as good as he can be,'' Paul Humphreys said. ``When you have an inner desire to do better, you make guys around you do better.''

Some actually watched the game video, too.

From his father, Humphreys also picked up the disciplinary coaching style that allows one mistake. If you don't give 100 percent all of the time, you will be disciplined. You might run, you might do extra drills, or when things really get bad, you will get kicked off the team.

``Kids have control over whether or not they play, 100 percent of the time,'' Dave Humphreys said.

At Master's where he was a guard, Humphreys learned under Mel Hankinson, who has written several basketball-related books. Then he assisted Bill Oates for two seasons and impressed im·press 1

Oates so much that he wrote a recommendation when Humphreys applied for the Canyon job.

``He'd spend a lot of time and had a lot of patience,'' Oates said. ``He did a solid job.''

Now that practices have started, what can Canyon expect from its new coach? The team returns almost nobody from last season, meaning Humphreys is starting over. That suits him fine.

``It's better for him,'' Paul Humphreys said. ``He can establish his own program. It will take him three to five years for him to get his philosophy put in. . . . It's harder to coach the high school level. In high school you take what you get and you mold mold, name for certain multicellular organisms of the various classes of the kingdom Fungi, characteristically having bodies composed of a cottony mycelium. ``I have high expectations for myself,'' the new coach said. ``Yeah, I'm excited to be at Canyon. I'm excited to have a varsity job.
