CANYON HIGH'S GO-TO GUYS ARE VICTORIOUS : CANYON 3, HIGHLAND 0.

Stires has it so easy. Anyone he chooses to set can deliver. He can go to Jason McMillen or Jimmy Giordano in the middle, or, to the outside, to Kevin Kirk, Dirk Frandsen or Justin Bush.

``It's nice to be have a whole group to go to,'' Stires said. ``We've got five guys on the court who can hit.''

It was more than enough for No. 7-ranked Canyon to ease past No. 6-ranked Highland 15-13, 15-6, 15-4 Wednesday at Highland, and it could bode bode 1

.

About the only person with an easier job than Stires is coach Spencer MacCuish.

``These guys want to win every game,'' MacCuish said. ``My job is to not get in the way.''

All five Canyon hitters got at least five kills, led by McMillen's 11. Kirk had eight kills, and Giordano added seven kills and four stuff blocks.

It doesn't matter where Stires receives the pass. Someone is nearby to make the kill. But the setter admitted there is a method.

``We like to run the middle a lot, so the team focuses on the middle,'' Stires said. ``We make them respect the middle.''

Once the opponent commits at least two blockers to the middle, Stires starts setting outside more.

Highland (2-1) didn't have enough manpower to match Canyon's (4-0) depth, although the Bulldogs got 20 kills and 13 digs from 6-foot-6 middle blocker Tom Haight, the tallest player on the court.

Haight said he doesn't mind getting the bulk of the sets.

``I want the ball and I want the pressure,'' he said. ``I've played a lot of volleyball. I think I can come through.''

Karl Buckman put down 13 kills, including nine in the first game. But Highland struggled on the outside. The five outside hitters combined for 10 kills and 17 hitting errors.

``Told you we sucked. We're not close to being a top-10 team,'' Highland coach Mike Bird said. ``Karl and Tom are fabulous out there, but they can only do so much.''

The Bulldogs' loss also throws into question their Golden League prominence prominence /prom·i·nence/ (prom´i-nins) a protrusion or projection.
