CANYON HIGH'S EERNISSE SCORES, REBOUNDS - WHATEVER.

Whatever it takes.

``I'll do whatever it takes, hit the boards, dive for a ball, take a charge, whatever the team needs,'' Eernisse said.

So far this season the 6-foot-5-inch Eernisse has done whatever it takes and then some.

Canyon head coach Dave Humphries reports that Eernisse is averaging 25 points and 12 rebounds a game. He had an impressive showing in the Valencia tournament scoring 33 points against Calabassas and 29 points against L.A. Baptist.

``Steve's the type of player where all he wants to do is please. He does whatever it takes to win,'' Humphries said.

Humphries, in his first season as the Cowboys' head coach, says he has designed his offense around Eernisse, who transferred from Palmdale last school year after basketball season.

``If you have a player like Steve, you want to get him the ball,'' Humphries said. ``He's a hard-nosed player who takes great pride in every point and every rebound he gets, so we try to get him the ball inside more.''

You won't hear Eernisse complain about getting the ball too much.

``I play a real physical game inside. Usually teams put a lot of pressure on me but I don't mind because if it's on me that means that it's off someone else and I can usually find him,'' he said.

It's his physical game that impresses his coach the most.

``He is phenomenal on the boards, he just seems to have a nose for the ball,'' Humphries said.

Even with his physical style Eernisse still tries to play under control. That's not always possible.

``I try to plan before I move. If somebody is playing off me, I might turn around and take the shot or if he's right on me I might pass it out,'' said Eernisse, who likes to know what he's going to do before he even moves. ``Sometimes if it's on the line, though, I can tend to get a little crazy.''

Humphries enjoys having a player like Eernisse to set the tone for his team.

``I never have to worry about Steve being ready to play or practice. He leads by example and he's very coachable. Having coached at the college level I know how important that is. I think a lot of colleges should start looking at him,'' Humphries said.

Eernisse said he has been contacted by a few colleges, including Penn State and the University of Maryland University of Maryland can refer to:

``It's hard right now,'' Eernisse said. ``I've been talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good lecture was my father's idea of discipline"; "the teacher gave him a talking to"

``He's improving every day and getting back into shape. David's a blue-collar kid who likes to take the big shots,'' Humphries said, pointing to as proof a game-winning three-pointer that Turner sank against Valencia.

Humphries also looks to defensive specialist Duke Fu to help keep opponents off their game.

``You can put him on anybody and he'll shut him down completely,'' Humphries said.

``I think it was culture shock for them because they weren't used to it but they expect it now,'' he said. ``I always demand a lot from my players but if you don't demand it, you're not going to get it.''

Eernisse remembers that first day as well.

``I remember thinking, this is going to be a hard season,'' he said.

As for the Cowboys' season outlook in the tough Foothill League, Humphries is cautious about any predictions.

``Our league is going to be a real barn burner "Barn Burner" is an episode of the American sitcom My Name Is Earl. Synopsis

Eernisse, on the other hand, has a little more of an optimistic view.

``If we improve, we could surprise a lot of people. Our expectations are to win the championship. We have a good enough team to play with the best of them,'' he said.

When alerted to Eernisse's prediction, Humphries just grinned and said, ``We'll see.''
