CANYON GRAD CRAFTS FUTURE GAME PLAN.

Byline: Bryan Winchell Special to the Daily News

Graduating from high school can be one of the most exciting times in a young person's life. It can also be one of the scariest.

``What now?'' is the question.

For recent Canyon High School Canyon High School can refer to:
  • Canyon High School (Anaheim) in Anaheim, California
  • Canyon High School (Santa Clarita), in Santa Clarita, California
  • Canyon High School (Canyon, Texas), in Canyon, Texas
graduate Tammy Hughes, there is an answer to that question.

Unlike some of her classmates Classmates can refer to either:
  • Classmates.com, a social networking website.
  • Classmates (film), a 2006 Malayalam blockbuster directed by Lal Jose, starring Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Indragith, Sunil, Jagathy, Kavya Madhavan, Balachandra Menon, ...
, Hughes, who played catcher on Canyon's varsity girls softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team for four years, has a grasp on what lays a few years down the road for her.

``I try to look more into the future and make sure what I'm doing now isn't going to hurt me later on,'' Hughes said.

A figure from her not-too-distant past, Canyon coach Larry Mohr, certainly believes in her. In his first year coaching girls softball, Mohr turned to Hughes for some team leadership.

``She did a fantastic job with a lot of the young kids,'' Mohr said. ``She led by example. She never missed a practice or a game.''

While Hughes isn't a highly vocal leader, one thing she did try to pass on to her teammates was her unorthodox bunting bunting, common name for small, plump birds of the family Fringillidae (finch family). Among the American buntings are the indigo bunting, in which the summer plumage of the male reflects sunlight as a rich, metallic blue; the painted bunting, or nonpareil (  style.

She places her right hand on the barrel of the bat, which some of her teammates thought was crazy, but her success at moving runners over and occasionally bunting for a base hit speaks for itself.

``I really like bunting,'' Hughes said. ``If a runner's on first, I usually bunt.''

Back to the present: Hughes has just walked through the Canyon graduation ceremony, is holding down a job at Hogi Yogi Hogi Yogi is a fast-food restaurant chain specializing in submarine sandwiches ("Hogis") and frozen yogurt ("Yogis"). There are approximately 70 locations throughout Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, and California. The sandwiches are similar to those served by Subway or Quiznos. , a sandwich and yogurt store in Canyon Country, and is taking time off from softball for the first time in nine or 10 years.

``I just felt like I should take a break this summer,'' Hughes said. ``It'll only be for a few months.''

Not even that, really. Hughes will attend College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  and will be working with the team in August, so she's planning on going to the batting cages Noun 1. batting cage - a movable screen placed behind home base to catch balls during batting practice

baseball equipment - equipment used in playing baseball
and to a field with her dad to work on her throws to second base.

Hughes will play softball for College of the Canyons for the next two years while she studies to be a physical therapist.

While four years at an out-of-state school sounds exciting, Hughes doesn't feel she's ready for it.``I didn't want to go away because I didn't think I'd be able to handle it,'' Hughes said.

One person who thinks Hughes can handle her future is Mohr.

``She knows what she wants to do,'' he said. ``She's the type who seems to be in control.''
