CANYON GETS RIVAL CHEERS; COWBOYS UPSET LEAGUE CHAMPS.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Respect comes from various ways, including the fax machine and telephone.

Canyon High's boys' basketball team already had earned respect on the court, having beaten Foothill League-champion Hart in Tuesday's Southern Section Division I-A second round. That night, Canyon coach Dave Humphreys received a phone call from Hart guard J.T. Stotts.

The two have been friends since Humphreys was a Hart assistant two years ago. Stotts told Humphreys during their 25-minute conversation Canyon's defense was so good, many of his 36 points came on shots where he couldn't see the basket.

The next day at school, Humphreys received a fax from his friend, Hart coachDavid Montgomery.

It said: ``Congratulations. You played a greatly inspired team game that is truly the envy of all coaches. Tell your team to enjoy this time and good luck on Friday.''

These are the types of rewards that come to a last-place team that beats the champion of its league. Plus, Pacific plays like another team Canyon has defeated: Valencia. Bryson can't get into foul trouble to be effective, Humphreys said.

Pacific also has a Stotts-like guard in 6-3 Chaun Ballard, who is averaging 21.7 points per game and scored 42 against Edison. Stotts scored 36 against Canyon on Tuesday, yet Jerreme Suarez got into his face enough to make it difficult for Stotts.

Also, don't overlook the home-court advantage. It might be an alternate site, but it's in the area and Canyon has played five games on the court, four in the Hart tournament and once during Foothill League play.
