CANYON EYES STATE LONG BEACH POLY WON'T BE AT FULL STRENGTH.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Canyon High has turned a highly anticipated matchup with Long Beach Poly in the state Division I boys' cross country final in Fresno on Saturday into what might be a runaway.

The Cowboys have become a national title contender with a highly touted threesome of seniors Luke Llamas and Jameson Mora MORA, In civil law. This term, in mora, is used to denote that a party to a contract, who is obliged to do anything, has neglected to perform it, and is in default. Story on Bailm. Sec. 123, 259; Jones on Bailm. 70; Poth. Pret a Usage, c. 2, Sec. 2, art. 2, n.  and junior Ryan Morgan.

Long Beach Poly, the state and nation's top-ranked preseason team, has fizzled.

Canyon defeated the Jackrabbits for the fourth time in the Southern Section Division I final with a course-record team time for its largest margin of victory over the defending state champions.

Poly, which has dropped to 21st in the national rankings released Monday, has yet to run against the Cowboys at 100 percent. The Jackrabbits, again undermanned, will be at the state championships without senior Oscar Mendez, who has sore shins.

``It would have be a lot harder if he were in it,'' Morgan said. ``They really never got a fair try. They are still awesome but it has relieved a lot of pressure.''

Another title contender, Rubidoux was moved to Division II for postseason competition when a recalculation re·cal·cu·late

lower division.

Jesuit, which surprised Canyon to win the state Division II title by three points, looms as the Cowboys' top challenger. Canyon beat Poly, Rubidoux and Jesuit in the Clovis Invitational on the 5,000-meter state meet course.

``We can't let it get to our heads,'' Mora said. ``It would have been nice to race (Poly) at full strength. I am also kind of disappointed Rubidoux got moved down. I would have liked to race all those teams at state. That would have been such a great race.''

--Running watch: Camarillo coach Mike Smith has closely monitored Brandon Lucero after a hip injury sidelined the senior last track season. Lucero rebounded to finish eighth in the Southern Section Division I final Saturday to earn a state meet berth.

Smith also keeps a close watch of Lucero away from running. Lucero has been dating Smith's daughter Jacqueline, a Camarillo senior, for the last two years.

``I've always said that the worst things for a runner are work and a girlfriend,'' Smith said. ``Brandon is a great young man. He seems to be handling it well.''

Royal, which finished ninth, was among ten section teams - four automatic and six at-large - to advance to the state meet. Thousand Oaks, which has risen to third in the state rankings, is optimistic about challenging Southern Section champion Dana Hills and Central Section champion Buchanan in the state final with the recovery of senior Ashley Patteson from an ankle injury.

``Not that league didn't matter, but we were more focused on the finals because that was what we wanted to do well in,'' Hancock said. ``We had some disappointing races but we wanted to put it together and really go for it. We have a lot of depth and knew we should have been ranked and better than these teams.''
