CANYON EXPECTED TO BRING BACK WELCH.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

CANYON COUNTRY - Has the seven-year curse finally ended?

Legendary prep football coach Harry Welch is back in command at Canyon High, vowing to turn around a once-proud program that has gone 38-46 since his retirement in 1993.

Canyon, a source said, is expected to announce today that the 55-year-old coach will replace Jack Bowman, who resigned in December after two four-win seasons.

``I'm excited not just for myself, but for my family and the students at Canyon High School Canyon High School can refer to:

,'' Welch said. ``This is good for everyone involved, and I think it will intensify the rivalry with all the (Foothill League) schools.''

Welch, who won three consecutive Southern Section championships and 46 games in a row from 1983 to 1985, had a 120-31-2 record (.794 winning percentage) in 11 seasons at Canyon.

be good,'' Welch said. ``I believe Canyon has the same good young men today that we had when I was coaching here before - and after I left.''

Many students on campus were pulling for Welch's rehiring.

``I don't really care about football, but if we had a winning team, it would be different,'' said sophomore Bryan Louzil, who said he attended three games last fall. ``If our school was winning, I would want to support them. Harry Welch is a good coach.''

Welch had reapplied two years ago when his successor, Larry Mohr, resigned. But the job went to Bowman. Welch continued as a Canyon teacher - he has been there for 31 years - but soon took a position as Valencia's offensive coordinator.

The move irked some who cited a conflict of interest because Welch was at Canyon during school hours. But Welch ignored the protestations and helped Valencia advance to the 1999 Division III
