CANYON COUNTRY -- A new junior high and high school are on the horizon for eastern Canyon Country.

Amid tire shops and abandoned tract homes, two newly acquired parcels of land will house the new schools for the Hart Union High School District.

``We want to create these schools as partner schools so students can travel on to that high school and build that culture of community,'' said Rob Gapper, the district's chief operations officer.

The schools are not expected to open until 2014 to 2017, but with College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  setting up its east campus there, Gapper said the district expects major growth in that area.

It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  for $10.8 million after purchasing an 80-acre parcel just northeast of the larger site for $3.5 million. The foundation acquires land for the Hart district.

In response to some complaints posed by Castaic-area residents upset by the purchase, Hart Superintendent Jaime Castellanos said the $14 million or $15 million spent by the Facilities Foundation on the Canyon Country property would only ``dent'' the $190 million price tag the forthcoming Castaic high school will probably have.

``The intention was to stay ahead of the curve. Castaic is still No. 1 on our radar.''
