CANYON COUNTRY EVENT HONORS VETERANS; KNIGHT SALUTES THOSE WHO SERVED.

Byline: Teresa Jimenez Daily News Staff Writer

George Meggs, 83, and Chuck Clark, 74, come to the Veterans Day celebration every year - the World War II veterans said it's their duty.

``We're making sure people remember the veterans,'' Clark said.

``We always make sure to be here,'' Meggs added.

The two senior members joined about 60 others at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Canyon Country on Tuesday morning to say the Pledge of Allegiance Pledge of Allegiance, in full, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, oath that proclaims loyalty to the United States. and its national symbol. , sing the national anthem anthem [ultimately from antiphon], short nonliturgical choral composition used in Protestant services, usually accompanied and having an English text. It was a welcome routine on a day set aside for honoring duty, service and freedom.

``This is what makes me proud,'' VFW See Video for Windows.  member John Olesh said, pointing to a reserve officer in uniform. ``He still goes, he still cares. This also makes me proud to be an American - this Junior ROTC group here.''

But the audience was most roused by state Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight's speech given in honor of the day. The Palmdale Republican, a former colonel and distinguished pilot, said he knew what the soldier experience is like, especially after serving in the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. .

``This is the day that we recognize soldiers' ultimate sacrifice and those in active duty,'' Knight said. ``Those in this country are very fortunate. We have not had to experience the Battle of Britain Battle of Britain, in World War II, series of air battles between Great Britain and Germany, fought over Britain from Aug. to Oct., 1940. As a prelude to a planned invasion of England, Germany attacked British coastal defenses, radar stations, and shipping. On Aug.  or the Hiroshimas. We're fortunate that our land has been saved.''

Knight also addressed the audience's concerns about spending on defense and veterans programs. The United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. And it has spent plenty of money on memorials honoring its soldiers, he said.

``With all our faults and government intrusions, it's still the best place in the world,'' Knight said.

Knight said he remembered coming home from the Vietnam War to a country that did not respect his service. But today, people flock to the memorial in Washington, D.C., and to the traveling wall replica Earlier document exchange software from Farallon Communications, Inc. that converted a Windows or Mac document into a proprietary viewing format. ``The times we came home, the country did not express gratitude for our sacrifice,'' Knight said. ``That memorial allows the country to now express that gratitude.''

But while Knight praised the United States and thanked soldiers for their service, he also asked the veterans to take their service one step further. He asked them to educate future generations about serving one's country.

``I think the veterans of today have another challenge to speak to the young people, to tell children and grandchildren GRANDCHILDREN, domestic relations. The children of one's children. Sometimes these may claim bequests given in a will to children, though in general they can make no such claim. 6 Co. 16.  what the military is all about - to preserve the peace,'' Knight said.

``Freedom is what it's all about. Sometimes it's expensive, especially when you look at the wall with 70,000 names, but it's worth it. Tell it like it was, tell it like it is. Freedom is expensive.''
