threw for three touchdowns as host Canyon of Canyon Country (9-2) scored at will in a 76-14 rout of Rio Mesa (10-2) of Oxnard on Friday night in the Southern Section's Northern Division quarterfinals.

The outcome was literally decided before the national anthem anthem [ultimately from antiphon], short nonliturgical choral composition used in Protestant services, usually accompanied and having an English text. The term is used in a broader sense for "national anthems" and for the Latin motets still used occasionally in  was sung. Due to a pregame mixup, the anthem came after the first quarter, by which time Canyon already had a 21-0 lead.

Canyon ended up scoring touchdowns the first eighttimes it had the ball, building a 49-0 halftime lead. The Cowboys ended up with 11 touchdowns on 13 possessions, and racked up 643 yards of total offense.

But that was hardly a shock, as the Cowboys scored 63 points in a first- round win over Royal last week and 62 in their regular-season finale against Valencia.

What was surprising was how well the Cowboys' defense contained Rio Mesa standout Malachi Lewis, who entered the game with 1,371 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns, and is being courted by Michigan, USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , Tennessee and Cal, among other schools.

When the score was 42-0, Lewis had a total of 0 yards rushing on nine carries. He finished with 35 yards on 18attempts.

``He's a very strong back, and he means a lot to their team,'' said linebacker Blake McMartin, the leader of the Cowboys' defense.

And without Lewis being able to produce, Rio Mesa quickly fell behind.

The 76 points is the second-most in Canyon school history, trailing only the 90 the Cowboys scored last month.

The victory, Canyon's eighth straight after starting the season 1-2 with losses to Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary.
