Fleshman defeated Marquand, who timed 18:03 to win her heat in the preliminaries, in their last four meetings. Last fall, Fleshman beat Marquand to place second in the Foot Locker West Regionals and in the national meet. She also defeated Marquand in track in the 3,200 meters in the Southern Section Masters Meet and state championships.

Jones was ninth in last year's state championships and timed 17:55 for the fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries last Saturday. In September, Fleshman, the 1997 state Division I runner-up, turned back Jones to win the Bell-Jeff Invitational.

her workouts in preparation for the Southern Section finals. Canyon coach Dave DeLong said if pushed Fleshman could eclipse her mark from the Mount SAC Invitational. Both Marquand and Jones, who are expected to set a brisk pace through the relatively flat first mile loop, should aid Fleshman's efforts.

``In the back of my mind I am hoping Lauren will go after a PR,'' DeLong said. ``She is going to run hard and there are a couple of people who will go out hard. She is not going to have to lead but I'm hoping at some point between one and two miles depending on how she is feeling, she can take the lead.''

The Canyon girls, winners of seven of the last eight Foothill League titles, qualified for the final for the fourth year in a row. The Cowboys, however, will be hard pressed to earn a berth in the state meet with five of the state's top 10 teams in Saturday's final, including No. 1 Esperanza, defending state champion Yucaipa and No. 8 Irvine.

In the preliminaries, the Cowboys, boosted by Fleshman's heat victory in 18:29 and the seventh-place finish of freshman Jazmin Treadway, squeezed into the fourth and final berth into the Southern Section championships by four points. Canyon's team time for its five scoring runners ranks eighth in the 12-team final.

``Division I is a very tough place to be,'' DeLong said. ``I told the girls if we lived anywhere else, we would be headed to the state meet. Division I in the Southern Section is tougher than the state meet.''
