CANYON'S DEFENSE MAKES BOWMAN PROUD VS. SAUGUS : CANYON 28, SAUGUS 21.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

It had been an emotional week for Canyon High defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. This position aids the head coach a great deal in many ways by delegating play calling to other coaches and allowing the head  Jack Bowman, something he fully expected since he saw Saugus on the Foothill League schedule when he joined the Cowboys.

Bowman, the former Centurions' head coach who was let go by Saugus following the 1996 season, tossed and turned each night this week. Fortunately, the Cowboys' defense followed suit, tossing Saugus around and turning a potential upset loss into a 28-21 victory Friday at Canyon High.

Canyon quarterback Jason McKeon ran for two touchdowns and threw the game-winning score with 2:11 left, squeaking squeak

``These kids are great,'' said Bowman, loved enough by his new team to receive the annual post-win Gatorade bucket dousing. ``These kids played their butts off.''

They needed to. Saugus (1-6, 0-2) hung with the favored Cowboys the entire game. Canyon (4-2, 2-0) didn't help itself with careless penalties and an ineffective running game save McKeon, who rushed for 56 yards in a game-high 19 carries.

The Centurions took a 21-13 lead with 10:32 left in the game thanks to a bit of trickery Trickery

It capped a wild 11-play drive that saw a Canyon clip on fourth down to keep the drive alive, a fumblerooski called back on a Saugus illegal procedure call and Garrett's toss, which caught Canyon fully unaware.

The Cowboys, behind McKeon, recovered quickly. He scored on a 4-yard run with 6:30 left, then watched as the defense - led by linebacker Drew Welch - sacked Parker on fourth-and-1 from the Centurions' 27.

Back on offense, McKeon got a first down on a 4-yard run to the Saugus 14, then found Tim Ryan
