CANYON, VALENCIA, SAUGUS GRID TEAMS TO KICK OFF SEASON.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

High school football teams are tired of hitting each other, the coaches say, and eager for the season openers.

A look at tonight's games, with starting times Noun 1. starting time - the time at which something is supposed to begin; "they got an early start"; "she knew from the get-go that he was the man for her"

Valley View at Canyon, 7:30 p.m.: The scoring could be high, and the game last less than two hours. Both teams feature talented running offenses and weaker defenses.

Canyon likes its running game, featuring seniors Monte McKeon and Jeff McKinley. They will get plenty of protection from offensive linemen such as Brian Arnold (6-0, 275) and Bob Mosier (5-11, 245). If quarterback Rick Thomas ST1TCH (born Rick Thomas) is American sampler for Mushroomhead and Ventana. It has been stated that Thomas was originally called "Stick", due to the fact that he is skinny, but someone mistakenly called him Stitch and the name stuck.  wants to throw, he's got Steve Lombardi ''This article is about the professional wrestler sometimes known as Kim Chee. Valley View's offensive line, which averages about 276 pounds, is even bigger than Canyon's, and the Eagles make it no secret that they run. But watch out: If an opponent puts nine on the offensive line, they will loft a pass to a tight end. If they run, chances are the ball will go to juniors Cory Noble, Robert Woods Robert Woods may refer to:

The key might be which defense is more successful. Neither has many returners.

Bishop Union vs. Valencia at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , 7 p.m.: Bad news already has surfaced at Valencia. Running back Donavan Calhoun, who rushed for 1,377 yards and 19 touchdowns last year as a junior, has a sore knee. But coach Brian Stiman expects him to play. Everyone else is healthy.

The other bad news for Valencia might be that Bishop has one of its best teams in years. It is ranked second in the Southern Section Division XI poll and defeated Hug High of Reno last week. Bishop has a returning running back, Peter Yerkes, who rushed for 1,409 yards last year. Yerkes, who gained 101 yards last week, also plays linebacker.

Perhaps Valencia should be concerned about the other Bishop Union running back, Josh Alexander. He fumbled twice in the first half against Hug, but came alive in the third quarter. As a linebacker, he returned an interception 60 yards for a score. He had a long punt return In American and Canadian football a punt return is one of the punt receiving team's options to respond to a punt. A player (usually a second or third string wide receiver or running back) positioned many yards from the line of scrimmage will attempt to catch or pick up the ball  called back and rushed for a 53-yard score.

Saugus at Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , 7:30 p.m.: Santa Barbara appears to be down, having just 38 players on its roster. But one is 6-feet-5, 250-pound Ryan Atkinson, a major-college prospect at tight end. Who will get him the ball? The quarterbacks, Armando Gonzalez and Jason Fernandez, are untested. The running backs are all inexperienced.

Saugus is very big and very experienced on the lines and in the offensive backfield, so scoring points shouldn't be a problem. Quarterback Chris Kobe, who completed 40 of 90 passes for 615 yards and a touchdown last season, also will see some time at safety. Running back Mark Pecaro, who rushed for 402 yards in 72 carries last year, also will see action at linebacker.
