CANSTRUCTION Kicks Off With Mayor Menino's Can Share Program: Both Events to Benefit the Greater Boston Food Bank; Grand Opening on Monday, October 28 at the Boston Design Center.

Over the weekend, 19 of the area's leading design, engineering and construction firms will be working to construct enormous structures entirely out of canned and packaged food items as part of the 7th annual CANSTRUCTION(R) event. CANSTRUCTION(R) is a national community service project that is trademarked and sponsored by the Society of Design Administration. Architects, engineers and students will compete to design and build gigantic 800 cubic foot structures made out of nonperishable food items.

The two-week event will be held in conjunction with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's Can Share food drive, with all food from both events donated to The Greater Boston Food Bank. It is expected that over 90,000 pounds of food will be donated to The Food Bank, which is the equivalent of nearly 70,000 meals. The wholesale value of this expected donation is $135,000.

Beginning on Monday, October 28, 2002, the public will be able to view these extraordinary sculptures, primarily at The Boston Design Center, however a few will be displayed at South Station and the Museum of Science in Boston. The event opens, Monday, October 28 and runs through Friday, November 8 where sixteen sculptures will be on display at The Boston Design Center, one sculpture on display at The Museum of Science and two sculptures on display at South Station in downtown Boston.

The opening event for CANSTRUCTION(R) will be held at the Boston Design Center on Monday, October 28 at 2:00 pm. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will be on-site to help kick-off the event as CANSTRUCTION(R) runs in conjunction with the Mayor's Can Share food drive, which also benefits The Food Bank.

Can Share, now in its 16th year, is the annual food drive sponsored by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Hunger, Federal Express, Project Bread, and the United States Postal Service.
