, said: "The fraud netted them over half a million pounds in cash but the benefit from that money is far more significant.

"We will argue that over six years they benefited considerably from their crime and built up considerable assets in Panama - land, flat, vehicles and a farm.

"We wrote a letter to the government there at the end of the trial to restrain the Darwin assets. But we have yet to hear back."

John Darwin John Haddrick Darwin (born 17 December 1923) was Government Statistician[1] of New Zealand from 1980-1984 and a member of the 1985-86 Royal Commission on the Electoral System. , 58, faked his death in a canoe accident in 2002 off Seaton Carew Seaton Carew is a small seaside resort within the borough of Hartlepool, England. He then went into hiding while his wife, 57, claimed he was missing at sea.

They raked in pension, insurance and mortgage payouts while even sons Mark, 33, and Anthony, 30, were fooled into believing their father was dead.

But under an assumed identity he travelled the world to set up a new life. Eventually Anne went to Panama to join her husband.

Det Insp Turnbull is preparing for a hearing - scheduled for Newcastle crown court in November - to decide the full value of the Darwins' fraud. Cleveland police will also ask for any profit from book or media deals to be treated as proceeds of crime.

Yet Det Con Andy Greenwood, who led the inquiry after Darwin was rumbled, admitted: "Without the Panama government's permission we may never know exactly how much money is there. We don't hold out much hope.

"That's why John Darwin chose Panama. He believed it would be impossible to get money out if they were ever caught.

"The biggest battle we face is getting those funds. But if we do not manage it by the time they are released they could get their hands on the money. It is so unjust."

Darwin must serve six years and three months while Anne got six-and-a-half years. They could return to Panama when released.
