CANINE CAN-DO NEW DOG TRAINING FOR POLICE DUTY.

Officials formally introduced Hasko, a 2 1/2-year-old German shepherd, to the Police Foundation Board at a demonstration on Wednesday. Hasko succeeds the recently retired canine Charly.

The seven-week course, made up of only two canine teams, will take place at California State University Enrollment
 at Channel Islands.

The department currently has three other canines - Bodo, Cero and Rex - on the force. The canines and their handlers have won several awards in national police canine competitions, including two world gold medals by Bodo and Officer Stephanie Shannon.

According to police Lt. Rex Jones, Hasko was purchased from a vendor in Germany and arrived in the United States on Aug. 16. The dog was bought with funds raised by the Friends of the Canines Organization and the Simi Valley Police Foundation.

The purchase and total training costs will exceed $10,000, Lt. Jones said.

Hasko is the fourth canine that the Friends of the Canines have helped the department purchase and train.
