CANDY RIDE LOOKING SWEET.

Byline: KEVIN MODESTI

DEL MAR Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:
  • Del Mar, California
  • Del Mar, Texas
  • Del Mar High School, located in San Jose, California
  • Del Mar Racetrack, located in Del Mar, California
 - At the end of 2003, those who were here probably will say Candy Ride's victory in last Sunday's Pacific Classic made it the horse race of the year. Better than Funny Cide's David-over-Goliath win at the Kentucky Derby Kentucky Derby

One of the classic U.S. Thoroughbred horse races. It was established in 1875 and run annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs track in Louisville, Ky. With the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, it makes up U.S. racing's coveted Triple Crown.

Better than the Seabiscuit-War Admiral showdown at the movies.

Things like this don't happen as often as racing outsiders imagine and racing insiders wish.

``There's no other sport like horse racing!'' gushed Sid Craig, who owns Candy Ride with his wife Jenny, after the 4-year-old and Julie Krone glided past Medaglia d'Oro at the top of the stretch and won by 3 1/4 lengths in a Del Mar-record 1:59.11 for 1 1/4 miles.

At times like this, no, there isn't.

Trevor Denman, the track announcer, brought Candy Ride into the winner's circle by calling him ``the new star of the American racing scene.''

Krone, who replaced injured Gary Stevens in what likely was a one-time deal and made it the biggest race to be won by a woman west of New York New York, state, United States

Stevens remembered that, right after Candy Ride arrived in California last winter, Ron McAnally told him the colt is ``12 lengths better than John Henry.''

McAnally laughed and said he didn't remember specifying 12 lengths better than his old star - but he had said Candy Ride is ''just as good'' and would win the Pacific Classic.

Craig wanted to bottle the moment.

``The last time he ran,'' he said, ``I'd had a couple of drinks, and I said he could be the best horse on the planet. Well, he could be.

if it gets any better than this in your own back yard.''

The ramifications ramifications nplAuswirkungen pl  of those two minutes might be felt all the way to Oct. 25, when the Breeders' Cup will be held at Santa Anita:

--Andy Beyer awarded Candy Ride a speed figure of 123 for the Pacific Classic, based on the final clocking and the apparent condition of the running surface Sunday, making it the highest-rated performance by any North American North American

and Moon Ballad. Last week, Candy Ride wasn't in the top 10.

--The morning-line maker for the Breeders' Cup future betting to be held today through Monday put Candy Ride second among Classic candidates, with 6-1 odds, behind Mineshaft, at 5-1. When the first round of future betting was held a month ago, Candy Ride was relegated to the ``field'' below the top 23 horses.

--Voters in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's weekly poll put Candy Ride in the top 10 for the first time at No. 3, behind 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri and Mineshaft but ahead of Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, Hollywood Gold Cup The Hollywood Gold Cup is a Grade I stakes race for thoroughbred horses inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. Before Candy Ride races next, some questions must be answered.

Who rides him, Krone or Stevens? (Bet on Stevens, who was in the colt's corner since the winter and did the right thing in advising Krone on Pacific Classic tactics.) Will the Craigs pony up $800,000 to make the Argentine-bred eligible for the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1¼ miles (2012 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup. ? (Bet they will, since they paid $200,000 when Paseana won the 1992 Distaff, and Candy Ride can earn the Horse of the Year title with a Breeders' Cup victory.) Will McAnally train Candy Ride up to the Breeders' Cup or use the Oct. 4 Goodwood Handicap at Santa Anita as a prep race? (L.A. fans can't lose either way.)

The Pacific Classic, drawing only four horses and forced to share the weekend headlines with Saratoga's Travers Stakes, inspired little prerace buzz.

But the postrace buzz figures to last the rest of the year.
