CANDIDATES SOUND OFF SAFETY, GROWTH, JOBS MAJOR TOPICS FOR MOST.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

PALMDALE - The start of the 2000 Palmdale City Council sounds much like the start of the 1999 race with candidates calling for greater public safety, a hospital, and economic development for the city's east side.

At a forum hosted Tuesday by the Greater Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
Chamber of Commerce, candidates began their campaigns for two seats open as the result of Shelley Sorsabal's and Kevin Carney's resignations earlier this year.

Vying for the three years remaining in Carney's term are Palmdale Chamber of Commerce leader Sandy Corrales Corrales can refer to: People

, businessman Rick Norris, Planning Commissioner John Mayfield, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus driver Joseph Rivera Jr.

Vying for the one year left on Sorsabal's term are former Councilman Jim Root, attorney Richard Loa, unsuccessful 1999 City Council candidate Alan Lee, former Littlerock Town Council member Jason Zink and recent Highland High School Highland High School or Highlands High School may refer to:

All the candidates except Van Dyk attended the forum.

Loa said public safety is his top issue. The recent upswing Upswing

``We have to watch that situation,'' Loa said.

Loa said another priority of his will be to spur economic development in the city's east side, an area many consider neglected in terms of businesses and services.

Root, a Highland High School teacher, emphasized his experience in city government, noting that he had served two terms on the City Council and had served on the Planning Commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments

. Whoever is elected to the one-year spot has to hit the ground running, Root said.

``We have two council members who have less than a year's experience,'' Root said. ``Experience is an important issue in this campaign.''

Lee, a municipal utility supervisor, noted that all the candidates were talking about the same issues - public safety, parity between the east side and west side, and the need for a hospital. The real issue for voters is who do they think has the right vision for the city's future, Lee said.

``I'm a simple man with a clear vision for Palmdale,'' Lee said. ``It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Zink, a real estate agent, said he wants to see a measure on the ballot directing the Antelope Valley Healthcare District to build a hospital in Palmdale by 2002.

In terms of job creation, Zink said the city should focus on attracting e-commerce jobs.

Zink also said the cities of Palmdale and Lancaster should enter into a sales tax-sharing agreement as a way to end bidding wars between the cities over major retail stores and auto dealers.

Corrales, who owns an advertising company, said she wants to focus on term limits and campaign finance reform Campaign finance reform is the common term for the political effort in the United States to change the involvement of money in politics, primarily in political campaigns. . Corrales also decried what she considers outside interference in Palmdale elections, a reference to Lancaster business leaders and officials, such as Republican Assemblyman George Runner George C. Runner, Jr. (born March 25 1952 in Scotia, New York) is a Republican California State Senator, who represents the 17th Senate District, which includes portions of Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County and Ventura County. , who either endorsed or provided campaign contributions in last year's election.

Rivera said he wants to limit population growth to keep the Antelope Valley from having the problems of areas like the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

. Rivera said growth is also a threat to the region's aerospace industry.

``I want to keep that country taste. I don't want to lose that here,'' Rivera said. ``We need to limit what we build because this might clog up our land and chase away jobs.''

Norris, who owns a company that manufacturers water filters, said reviving the city's east side is a major issue.

``There's nothing being done to the east side,'' Norris said. ``We have to have an east side hospital.''

Norris said the city should also pursue joint-use agreements with the school districts to use school facilities for recreation programs.

Mayfield, owner of Mayfield Financial and Business Services, also emphasized his experience in city government. Mayfield has been on the city's Planning Commission for 15 years and has chaired it for the last seven years.

Mayfield also said the revitalizing the east side is a major issue.

``We need to make the east side a priority. We have to stimulate economic development in that area,'' Mayfield said.

In terms of job creation, Mayfield said the city should examine where the Antelope Valley's commuters are going.

``We should survey people and see where they work and see what we can do to bring those jobs here,'' Mayfield said.
