Hahn, continuing to press his case against Villaraigosa at a downtown news conference, repeated his prediction of victory.

``We are going to surprise all the pundits,'' Hahn said. ``We did four years ago and we will next week. I like the position I'm in. I'd rather be charging from behind and gaining momentum instead of running a foundering campaign.''

Hahn and his campaign have said they believe the election is much closer than independent polls have it and believe undecided voters will turn to him because of his record on public safety.

The mayor continued to press Villaraigosa about being the sole ``no'' vote in the state Legislature A state legislature may refer to a legislative branch or body of a political subdivision in a federal system.

``Mr. Villaraigosa keeps offering different excuses,'' Hahn said. ``First, he says he voted for another measure. Antonio Villaraigosa still hasn't explained why he voted against this landmark legislation. Mr. Villaraigosa should just tell the truth about why he voted the way he did.''

Villaraigosa said he did vote for a tougher bill the week after voting against the first measure.

``I understand this issue,'' Villaraigosa said. ``I grew up in a home where there was domestic violence.''

Also, he said he did vote for the appropriation measure that funded the bill.

To the high school students, Villaraigosa said he believed the mayor should have a formal relationship in running the public school system and that the issue of education had to be dealt with as more than a campaign issue.

``If four years from now I don't keep my promise that I'm going to work hard to try to turn around our schools, that I'm going to be involved in our schools ... then the people of this city shouldn't support me,'' Villaraigosa said.

Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the runoff election.
