CANDIDATES PITCH TRUCK PLAN FOR 118.

Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Daily News Staff Writer

Two candidates for elected office at state and local levels said Tuesday that they know what it's going to take to get heavy trucks off busy Highway 118: Drive them out of town.

Keith Millhouse, a candidate for Moorpark City Council, and Tony Strickland, Republican candidate for the 37th Assembly District, held a joint press conference on the corner of New Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Avenue and Liberty Bell Road as the election season kicks into high gear. The two hopefuls said the way to get trucks off the busy road is to make it less attractive for them to be there.

That means increase patrolling by the California Highway Patrol highway patrol

, greater enforcement of vehicle codes and a more regular schedule of inspections at local weigh stations A weigh station is a checkpoint along a highway to inspect vehicular weights. Usually, trucks and commercial vehicles are subject to the inspection. Overview
Weigh stations are equipped with scales, some of which permit the trucks to continue moving while being weighed,
 - which the candidates said truckers know are open only sporadically.

``I suspect that many of these trucks are sliding through here because they know the scales are closed and they know that their trucks won't pass muster,'' said Millhouse, as large big rigs Big Rig was a punk band from the San Francisco Bay Area fronted by singer/songwriter Jesse Michaels. Michaels performed with the group after the break up of his previous project, Operation Ivy, and before forming the band Common Rider.  and tractor trailers drove by near Liberty Bell Road.

Since many of their proposed fixes will cost money, the men said they will work to gain support among other elected officials at the state and federal level to bring that funding to the city.

``The most essential role of government is public safety,'' Strickland said. ``We can't afford to have one accident on Los Angeles Avenue. One accident is too many.''

He said that he did not know how many accidents involving trucks there have been on the street.

Strickland is the Republican candidate for the 37th Assembly District seat being vacated by Nao Takasugi. He is opposed by Democratic candidate Roz McGrath, and Reform Party candidate Michael Farris.
