PASADENA - Congressional rivals Rep. James Rogan and state Sen. Adam Schiff

Adam B. Schiff (born June 20 1960) is an American politician. He first served in the California State Senate.
clashed over the role government ought to play in regulating film content during a radio debate Tuesday.

Representing a district that is home to many major movie studios, Rogan, R-Pasadena, said he doesn't think it's his job to tell movie bosses how to do theirs.

``I don't view the role of the U.S. Congress as the great censor censor (sĕn`sər), title of two magistrates of ancient Rome (from c.443 B.C. to the time of Domitian). They took the census (by which they assessed taxation, voting, and military service) and supervised public behavior. ,'' Rogan said during the hourlong debate on KPCC-FM, the radio station of Pasadena City College.

Schiff, D-Pasadena, agreed that the government should not restrict the content of movies, but said he is concerned about recent reports that R-rated films are being marketed to young people.

``The government does have a role to make sure that films that are not intended to be viewed by children are not being marketed to children,'' Schiff said.

Schiff is challenging Rogan's 27th Congressional District Noun 1. congressional district - a territorial division of a state; entitled to elect one member to the United States House of Representatives

Schiff supports the McCain-Feingold measure. That campaign finance reform law would ban soft money contributions - unrestricted donations from companies that political parties can use for such purposes as television commercials on behalf of candidates.

The measure also would limit individual contributions and require stricter disclosure about contributors.

Rogan has not supported the measure. But he said during the debate that he would support a ban on soft money, if the ban would allow union members to opt out of using a portion of their dues for political purposes.

Democrats have targeted Rogan because he played a key role in the impeachment impeachment, formal accusation issued by a legislature against a public official charged with crime or other serious misconduct.
