CANDIDATES FACE OFF OVER REPRESENTATION.

Byline: Harrison Sheppard Staff Writer

At their first debate, the candidates for the Los Angeles City Council's 2nd District sparred over the fate of the Sunland-Tujunga area in the redistricting redistricting: see legislative apportionment.  process.

At a packed forum before 300 people, entertainment executive Wendy Greuel accused her opponent, Assemblyman Tony Cardenas, D-Mission Hills, of supporting maps that would exclude Sunland-Tujunga from his district, if he were to win.

Greuel said she is fighting to make sure she does represent the area.

``I want to represent Sunland-Tujunga,'' she said. ``I will get elected. I will fight for you, so you will no longer feel like a stepchild step·child

The latest proposed maps for the new City Council districts offer two options for the 2nd District, depending on who wins the March 5 election.

Under the latest proposed maps, if Greuel wins, she would represent Sunland-Tujunga, but if Cardenas wins, he would not.

Instead, the area would be part of District 6, now represented by Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, who currently also represents the neighborhoods around Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

Greuel said City Council President Alex Padilla, a close Cardenas ally, appointed four members to the 21-member redistricting commission, and therefore, she said, Cardenas supports the latest maps.

But Cardenas said he was not consulted before the maps were released, and he noted that a Greuel supporter, San Fernando Valley secession leader Richard Close, also sits on the commission.

Cardenas said Close declined an offer to meet with him prior to the maps being released.

Cardenas stopped short of matching Greuel's pledge to keep the community in the 2nd District, but he noted the maps have not been finalized yet.

If elected to a district that includes Sunland-Tujunga, Cardenas said, he would make sure Sunland-Tujunga was fairly represented by opening a district office in the area and fully staffing it.

``I'm going to get every department head in this community, get them out of the office, get them out of the car, and have them walk these streets,'' he said.
