``We recognize you as the greatest generation because of your sacrifices and the freedoms you have left us,'' Hahn told the crowd of some 200 people. ``It is humbling to be here with the people who destroyed the Nazi terrorism.''

Villaraigosa said he also was honored to be appearing before the group as both also paid tribute to the Japanese-American 142nd Battalion for its heroism.

``Despite the fact that many of their families had been interned in camps, they went to Europe to fight for democracy,'' Villaraigosa said. ``The 20th Century gave us this greatest generation as it also gave us our greatest tragedies and tests.''

The Villaraigosa campaign also began a new television commercial critical of Hahn. The commercial deals with the investigations of the Hahn administration and what it says are broken promises and failures to hire more police and improve schools.

Hahn consultant Kam Kuwata said he believes the commercial shows concern by the Villaraigosa camp on how close the election is becoming.

``We don't have polls, but we are making thousands of calls every night and we sense a shift,'' Kuwata said. ``We think that voters are beginning to focus on the difference between the two candidates and we think they will come back to the mayor.''

Villaraigosa has an edge on Hahn in fundraising, but Kuwata said he believes the mayor will catch up.
