CANDIDATES' FILING DEADLINE IS TODAY PAPERWORK MUST BE TURNED IN TO RUN IN NOV. 8 ELECTION FOR SCHOOL, WATER BOARD SEATS.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The filing period closes at 5 p.m. today for most candidates running in the Nov. 8 elections, and officials are prepared for a crowd near closing time.

``We'll stay here until we can get an unofficial list,'' said Grace Chavez of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Registrar/Recorder's Office. ``It will take us a few days to review all the paperwork turned in to come up with a finalized list.''

Candidacy filing closes today for the seats on the boards of the William S. Hart Union High School District, Saugus Union School District The Saugus Union School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves the Saugus, Valencia, and Canyon Country communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California. As of March 25,2006, it has 15 elementary schools. , Sulphur Springs School District The Sulphur Springs School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves portions of the Canyon Country and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California. As of March 26, 2006, it has 8 elementary schools.  and Santa Clarita Community College District, Offices 1 and 3. Filing for the Newhall County Water District also closes today.

Because incumbents have not filed to run for re-election, the deadline has been extended until 5 p.m. Wednesday for the Newhall, Castaic Union and Acton-Agua Dulce Unified school districts.

Many of those expressing interest in running have taken out papers, but have not yet turned them in, which often results in the rush expected this afternoon.

In the Acton-Agua Dulce school board race, incumbents Max Duran and Fred E. Heslep have filed along with challengers Mark Distaso, Michael Richard

Only incumbent John Kunak has filed to run again in the Castaic district for one of three seats available. Other candidates completing papers are Angela Marler and Susan Christopher.

In the Newhall district, incumbent Steven Tannehill has filed, as have newcomers J. Michael McGrath Michael 'HOPPER' McGrath is a former Irish sportsperson who played hurling with Galway in the 1980s.

Michael Mc Grath, was born on the 30/6/1963 who hails from the Sarsfields club in County Galway, was an outstanding score-getter during his inter-county career.

The two trustee positions open at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  include Office No. 1, for which incumbent Ernie Tichenor has filed, although others have said they were interested in running. In Office No. 3, incumbent Joan McGregor appears to be running unopposed.

In the Saugus district, none of those indicating an interest in serving has completed paperwork, unlike the Sulphur Springs Sulphur Springs, city (1990 pop. 14,062), seat of Hopkins co., NE Tex., in a farm area; inc. 1859. Vegetables, wheat, rice, and corn are grown, and livestock and dairying are important. There is clay and timber in the area.  district, where the three incumbents, Kerry Clegg, Michael P. Hogan and Sheldon Wigdor, have all filed.

The Newhall County Water District also is holding elections for three board seats currently held by Joan Dunn, Barbara Dore and Maria Gutzeit. So far, only Gutzeit and Dunn have declared a re-election run. They are joined by challenger B.J. Atkins, who runs a local environmental services consulting company.
