CANDIDATE FEARS FOR CITY'S FUTURE; PRESERVING SANTA CLARITA'S QUALITY OF LIFE TOPS REASONS TO RUN.

Safe streets, good schools and prudent development drew Kent Carlson Kent Carlson (born January 11, 1962 in Concord, New Hampshire) is a retired American ice hockey defenceman.

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  three years ago.

But as Carlson, 37, watched the community's continued growth, he has become concerned that Santa Clarita's best qualities could be lost along the way.

Carlson, who has never sought an elected position, has decided to run for one of three open City Council seats in April to help improve the city.

In particular, some council members have made promises to residents and then changed their positions, Carlson said. He cited as an example the City Council's approval this week of plans to widen Newhall Ranch Road to eight lanes, reversing a previous decision to go to six lanes.

``Voters elect someone and say these are the things we want. When (elected officials) don't follow that path, it causes chaos,'' Carlson said. ``The first 10 years - that's the city's infancy. And in a blink blink

The terms of Mayor Clyde Smyth and council members Carl Boyer and Jo Anne Darcy expire in April. Only Smyth has officially announced that he will not seek re-election, and the other two have until January to decide.

The race already has attracted several candidates, including Mike Egan, a Valencia High School Valencia High School may refer to:

``We have a great Sheriff's Department and great community involvement,'' Carlson said. ``We could really strive to be No. 1.''

Carlson said he also would like to see the city and the local school districts work together to ensure quality education and quality of services to residents.
