CANDICE BERGEN NAMED STAR PRESENTER OF 1992 AS SPRINT'S SPOKESPERSON

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint spokesperson Candice Bergen has been named Star Presenter of 1992 by Advertising Age magazine for representing the perfect match between a company and its spokesperson.
Bergen, Emmy-award winning actress and star of the hit TV series "Murphy Brown," won the honor for her savvy, humorous attitude and effectiveness in explaining the complexities of long distance calling plans to consumers.
"It was very important to Sprint that we find a spokesperson who could communicate to consumers in a straightforward and professional manner, and yet maintain a sense of humor," said Jorge Rodriguez, vice president of marketing and advertising at Sprint. "We found that in Ms. Bergen, and it was a perfect fit."
Sprint's TV spots have remained refreshingly lighthearted compared to the often antagonistic approach used by its competitors and, according to Rodriguez, Bergen has been extremely well-received since she debuted in Sprint's ads in October 1990 to promote services for residential and small-business customers.
"Ms. Bergen exemplifies wit, grace, intelligence and integrity, and is recognized as an individual with high professional standards," said Rodriguez. "We can't think of a better person to represent Sprint. She cannot be duplicated."
Bergen, with her usual charm and wit, thanked Ad Age for recognizing her, saying, "I am honored. I mean, when I think about all the legends in this business that have gone before me -- Madge, Mr. Whipple, Morris the Cat, Charlie the Tuna, The Man from Glad. These are hard shoes to fill."
