CANCER-BEATING COLLIE OPENS 'THE BARKSON; Scrooble is top dog.Byline: Hilary Duncanson A CANCER-BEATING collie collie, breed of large, agile working dog developed in Scotland during the 17th and 18th cent. It stands from 22 to 26 in. (55.9–66 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 50 to 75 lb (22.7–34 kg). was top dog at the opening of a pounds 3million treatment centre for pets. Seven-year-old Scrooble was VIP guest at Edinburgh University's Veterinary Cancer Care centre, dubbed "The Barkson" after the renowned Beatson cancer clinic. Scrooble, an agility contest finalist at Crufts last year, was given a tour of the centre, based at the university's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. He completed eight months of chemotherapy for lymphoma at the institution's hospital for small animals. Praised The centre, officially opened yesterday by the Duchess of Hamilton, is expected to treat up to 20 pets a week. Cancer is the main cause of death in household pets, affecting around one in three dogs and a fifth of all cats. Scrooble's owner, Sara Hawkswell, 42, of Armadale,West Lothian West Lothian, council area (1993 est. pop. 146,730), 164 sq mi (425 sq km), and former county, S central Scotland. Under the Local Government Act of 1973, West Lothian was divided between the Lothian and Central regions. , praised the new treatment centre. She said: "When Scrooble was undergoing treatment, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. "The new centre will be a fantastic addition to the care given to animals with cancer." The clinic will provide radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery for animals. It will also be an important centre for research into cancer-causing genes and tumour progression. Centre director Professor David Argyle said: "The centre will have the most sophisticated diagnostic procedures.
