CANADA HAS A NEW KING AND QUEEN OF ROMANCE
TORONTO, Feb. 14 /CNW/ - On this day of hearts and roses, two Canadians have emerged as the epitome of all that romance was meant to be.
Yolanda and David New of Sydenham, Ontario were chosen today on CTV's SHIRLEY as "Canada's Most Romantic Couple," marking the conclusion to a national contest sponsored by Taster's Choice that drew entries from across the country.
Yolanda, 31, and David, 36, were judged by the show's audience to be the best real life counterparts to the engaging duo in the "Taster's Choice Courtship" commercials. For convincing the judges that theirs was the brightest torch of three finalist couples, Yolanda and David win an all-inclusive, one-week trip to London, $1,000 spending money, and possibly a lunch with the advertising series' actors.
"I can't believe this is really happening," said David New at a celebration party following the SHIRLEY taping.
"David and Yolanda have a unique quality about them. They are definitely soul mates," said one audience member. "You get a special warm feeling from the way they look at each other," said another.
"This entire contest has been a wonderful experience for everyone involved -- the contestants, the judges, the organizers. I'm really glad we were able to divert Canadians' attentions from more serious matters and them something to aspire to," says Taster's Choice Brand Manager Greg Petrie.
Competing against the News were Merrilee and Ken Vanstraelen of Winnipeg and Claire and Marcel Boivin of Kanata, Ont. All three couples had advanced from a previous stage which saw six semifinalists take verbal and written "romantic quotient" tests. Original entry to the contest was through a 500-word submission portraying the contestants' uniquely romantic relationship.
Judging the semifinalist match in "Canada's Most Romantic Couple" Contest was conducted by Chatelaine Publisher Lee Simpson, SHIRLEY Host, Shirley Solomon, Lilana Novakovich, Canada's top soap opera columnist and agent to many leading daytime television stars; and Taster's Choice Brand Manager Greg Petrie.
The phenomenally popular commercials that inspired "Canada's Most Romantic Couple" Contest are up to episode three in Canada. "As far as number four is concerned," says Petrie, "I'll only whet the appetite of the many loyal followers of our 'Taster's Choice Courtship' by saying that the romance continues and deepens -- on CTV on March 1 during Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."
