Byline: Randy Hill

Chris Ford Christopher Joseph Ford (born January 11, 1949 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA) is a former professional basketball player and head coach. A 6' 5" (1.96 m) guard from Villanova University, he played ten seasons (1972-1982) in the NBA as a member of the Detroit Pistons and Boston  can be seen on national TV today, performing a duty that seems as impressive as becoming valedictorian of summer school.

``Yeah, I'm the guy,'' said Ford, sounding very much like a guy who would have preferred to be the guy somewhere else.

The Clippers coach happens to be in Secaucus, N.J., assigned as a representative for his team in the NBA's draft lottery Draft lottery could refer to:

Because the Clippers didn't qualify for the playoffs, they and 12 others are eligible to acquire the first pick in the NBA Draft The NBA Draft is an annual North American event in which the National Basketball Association's (NBA) thirty teams (29 in the United States and one in Toronto, Canada) can select players who wish to join the league. , held June 30 at Washington, D.C.

Ford said he will not be toting any good-luck charms.

Actually, there's not much to see. The 13 poor souls representing the non-playoff teams will be introduced by commissioner David Stern. Then the process of using Ping-Pong-ball combinations to determine the first three picks will be explained, and simulated drama may be whipped up before the draft order is announced.

Ping-Pong balls numbered 1 through 14 are loaded into the hopper with 1,001 four-ball combinations divided up and issued to each team, the number of possibilities corresponding to the franchise's 1999 on-court futility. The Vancouver Grizzlies The name Grizzlies may refer to:

, eligible for the No. 1 pick for the first time, have 250 four-ball combinations. The Charlotte Hornets, best among the NBA's bad teams, have just five. That's five chances out of 1,001 to score the first pick.

The Clippers have 200.

A statistic that could make the process a bit more dramatic: In this decade, only two teams with Ping-Pong supremacy going into the lottery came out with the top pick - Philadelphia in '86 and New Jersey in .90.
