Theodore DeVries of Abe's Newhall Pawn Shop and Diamond Exchange is seeing the same thing.``We're starting to hear more that they need gas money,'' DeVries said. ``We're seeing construction workers bringing in their tools to get enough money for gas to get to work.''

DeVries said that a woman driving from Bakersfield to pick up a friend at the airport stopped in when she found herself short on gas.

``She didn't have enough, so she pawned a ring. She and her friend picked it up on the way back.''
