A new campus health center offering free primary care and health education is slated to open Tuesday at the new California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , satellite campus, cutting students' commute to the main campus for care.

Although plans for a clinic with more services - some open to the general public - were delayed because of Ventura County's mental health department crisis, officials see the new center as another step in the campus's growth.

``It was tops on our priority list in the planning process,'' said Stephen Lefevre, campus director. ``This will be the first time the off-campus center has had a student health center on site. That's something we couldn't do in Ventura. We didn't have the space.''

The satellite campus of CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  moved last month from its 30,000-square-foot facility in a Ventura building to the 64-acre former Camarillo State Hospital site.

The health center will be located in a 1,500-square-foot portable building adjacent to the administration building.

The hours of operation are to be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with only a clerical employee working Friday to maintain records and make appointments.

``It's essentially a half-day operation - at least to begin with,'' said Lefevre. ``We figure that's when the students will be utilizing the services the most.''

University officials originally planned to have a more comprehensive operation - one that also offers services to university staffers and in some cases the general public.

But officials said those plans were put off because the county has been immersed in problems and investigations stemming from last year's failed merger of the Ventura County Behavioral Health Behavioral health was first used in the 1980's to name the combination of the fields mental health and substance abuse. As an example, an organization serving both mental health and substance abuse clients might refer to its practice as behavioral health or  Department and Public Social Services Agency.

That crisis left county officials unable to participate fully in the planning process for the university clinic.

``That delayed all of our activities,'' said Handel Evans, university president. ``They're not in a position to plan at the moment. But eventually, as we grow, this particular facility will obviously be too small. Eventually we hope to expand to more comprehensive care.''
