``It was a combat place,'' said Royal High School principal Bob LaBelle. ``It was a combination of World War I, World War II and World War III World War III (abbreviated WWIII), or the Third World War, is a term used to describe a hypothetical conflict on the scale of World War I and World War II, or even larger, such as a nuclear holocaust. .''

Priority upgrades to electrical and plumbing services were completed just in time for school. But overall modernization for both campuses is expected to last 11 more months.

``It's nice to be able to make the improvement,'' Roop said. ``We always knew we needed them. Now we can make them, thanks to the voters.''

The school district will be spending more than $5.7 million at Simi Valley High School. Modernization at Royal High School will cost more than $8.7 million.

Concrete walks and major sites have been paved at both campuses, and landscape repair and restoration will be ongoing throughout the duration of the project.

Heavy-duty work will continue throughout the school year, said schools Superintendent Kathryn Scroggin scroggin

During the school year, every building will have to be vacated anywhere from four to six weeks, district officials said.

Bond projects will be carried out in a 10-year period. Projects in the safety and code compliance categories are priority.

Atherwood Elementary - where half the campus is composed of portables - did not see any change during the summer. Considered a top priority, school officials said the plans are still in review. Construction of a new wing at the east end is expected to get under way in the fall.

``That school is in the worst shape of any of the schools,'' Roop said.

School officials say new construction is also needed to accommodate increase enrollment expected from the Big Sky project.
