While attending freshman orientation at UC Irvine recently, Christine Liang stayed in a dorm room similar to the one she'll be sharing with a couple of friends this fall.

So, what was it like?

"Uh, small," she says with a giggle.

College fees may increase over time, but the average size of a dorm room hasn't budged one square foot.

With just enough space for essentials, about 1 million teens bound for residence halls at a four-year university (based on 2006 data by UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute The Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) serves as an interdisciplinary center for research, evaluation, information, policy studies, and research training in postsecondary education. ) will be hitting their local retailers in the coming weeks for decor that's smart, affordable and makes a statement about their personal sense of style.

For Liang -- a 17-year-old from Calabasas who plans to major in psychology and social behavior In biology, psychology and sociology social behavior is behavior directed towards, or taking place between, members of the same species. Behavior such as predation which involves members of different species is not social.  -- that means bedding in bright, vibrant colors for her twin-size mattress for starters.

"I'm also bringing lots of pillows," she says. "I love having a ton of pillows on my bed."

The bed is the most logical place to start when it comes to shopping for dorm furnishings. So say the experts who have a stake in what the National Retail Federation gauges as a $37 billion back-to-college industry.

This year's bedding selection is especially colorful and even comes in a variety of prints and patterns, from Hawaiian florals and bold nautical stripes to retro circles.

"Just a little infusion of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

addresses the need to have your own self-identity," says Yumiko Whitaker, a spokeswoman for the giant Swedish retailer IKEA IKEA Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd (Swedish home furnishings retailer founder's initials and location) . "Maybe you're a mod person or you're goth and you like black, or you like the natural colors, or the bold, bright colors."

After settling on bedding, coming up with accessories for the rest of a dorm room should be easy with the range of products available today.

Think clocks, lamps, pillows, towels, canvas storage baskets, over-the-door mirrored memo boards and area rugs.

"Obviously, you want your storage items, but you can also add things that punch up color, like a rug, which helps to pull the look of the room together," says Catherine Gentile of the national retailer Bed Bath & Beyond. "So, fashion and function are things you want to really think about."

Even before Cathy Lou heads to UC San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  this fall to study architecture, the 18-year-old from Calabasas has been thinking a lot about the decor of her dorm room, down to a corkboard cork·board

She's hoping to grow it once she gets there.

"What's great about dorm life is you can open your door and people will be there," she says, adding "that's what I hear.

"So, I'm going there to make friends," she says. "And pick up a degree along the way."

When it comes to small spaces, function is everything. This season's dorm decor promises this and good looks too, from multitasking multitasking

OVER-THE-DOOR MIRRORED MEMO BOARD

OVER, UNDER AND ABOVE

Look for organizers, storage containers and dual-purpose essentials that make use of ordinarily untapped space. Many retailers, from JCPenney to Bed Bath & Beyond, sell over-the-door memo-board mirrors and organizers for just about everything under the sun. Kohl's sells bed risers that allow for doubling up on storage boxes under the box spring. Keep extras out of sight in canvas or wicker storage baskets that can be labeled and slid into space-saver shelving above a desk or a bed.

KLIPPAN SOFA

>FIND IT: IKEA

>PRICE: $499.99

SEATING

Invest in a storage ottoman. Not only is it great for storing stuff, but it also provides seating so visitors are not lounging all over your bed. Another option? Bed Bath & Beyond carries a chair that folds flat for storing under the bed or hiding away in the closet. And if you've got the room, why not splurge on IKEA's iconic Klippan sofa or a bean bag, depending on your personal style?

FABRIC TOTE

>PRICE: $9.99

FOR THE BATHROOM

Whether you're sharing with just one roommate, a few suite-mates or the entire floor, you'll want to think about your bathroom setup. Shower shoes and a shower tote made of plastic or fabric are great for carrying your personal-care items down the hall. In a shared bathroom situation, a space saver will help maximize the area behind the toilet and give you and your roommate some shelf space.

ABOUT YOUR MATTRESS

Chances are you will not be the first person to have ever slept on your mattress. Consider a mattress protector A mattress protector is an item of removable bedding that sits on top of or encases a mattress to provide protection to the mattress. Some mattress protectors also provide protection to the individual sleeping on the mattress from allergens and irritants such as dust mites, bed . This zippered zip·pered

casing acts as a barrier between you and your mattress, keeping out dust mites and other pesky allergens. For added comfort, try a mattress topper Mattress toppers are designed to lie atop an existing mattress. They are made primarily from foam. Their function is to provide a layer of comfort and warmth between the user and the mattress. They are of particular benefit when the existing mattress is worn or uncomfortable.  -- known back in the day as an egg crate egg crate Nursing A popular term for a foam mattress with a chicken wire-like pattern of elevations and depressions, likened to that of an egg carton, most useful for Pts with recalcitrant decubitus ulcers .
