CAMPBELL HALL UNLEASHES PERFECT STORM EASY VICTORY IN STATE FINAL CAPS 32-0 SEASON CAMPBELL HALL 74, ST. MARY'S 53.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

SACRAMENTO - A few days before the Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:

  • Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood, California
of Studio City boys' basketball season started, Joe Ford pulled aside Vikings coach Terry Kelly to deliver some important news.

``Coach, we're going undefeated this year,'' said Ford, a senior forward.

Kelly remembers the moment well.

``I told him he was crazy,'' he said.

Who's crazy now?

With Ford elevating his game to a spectacular new level and Campbell Hall playing free and easy Saturday at Arco Arena Coordinates:

The Vikings (32-0) are the first team in the Daily News' coverage area to finish a season undefeated since Glendale in 1985 and the first to do it in the Southern Section since Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

It's Campbell Hall's first state championship.

Ford, who will play at the University of Pacific next season, finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots and thoroughly outplayed St. Mary's Gonzaga-bound standout Larry Gurganious, whom Ford harassed for 16 turnovers.

Conor Turley added 16 points and five rebounds despite being in foul trouble, and freshman Jrue Holiday had 15 points.

``It's just something I felt we were capable of doing,'' Ford said. ``That's why I told coach about it. He thought I was nuts, of course. But deep down I truly felt this team could put this type of season together.''

The irony is that the season was anything but perfect everywhere else but on the playing court.

The Vikings stared down one challenge after another while making their dominant run, seemingly growing stronger with each new hurdle.

``We've had some incredible adversity all year long,'' Kelly said. ``It makes what we've done even that much more special.''

The key is the Vikings kept finding ways to flick away trouble. When Joe Ford, Handler and Tolbert missed the first two weeks, brothers Justin Holiday (sophomore) and Jrue Holiday (freshman) and Robert Ford seamlessly stepped into the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

``They came up so big and so fast for us,'' Joe Ford said. ``That was really the key to this whole thing.''

And when Robert Ford left with the head injury, Tolbert simply stepped in at point guard and kept the Vikings' offense flowing as they proceeded to blow the game wide open.

``The whole team has stepped up at different times this year,'' Joe Ford said. ``That's why we don't panic

It helps to have a superior player such as Ford, who swooped over and around the St. Mary's defense in a dominating performance.

``It's just a tremendous feeling right now,'' Ford said. ``It's hard to really figure out a way to explain it. It just feels great.''
