``When breast cancer hits, it hits an entire family and all the attention and care should go to the woman,'' Bill Bradley said. ``But men are traumatized too, and it's important to know other men are out there like them.

``As a husband of a breast cancer survivor, I have tried to reach others going through it with a kind word, or a story or a letter,'' he said.

The forum at the Glendale YWCA was held to let women know about ENCOREplus, a program sponsored by the Y that provides free pap smears, clinical breast exams and mammograms. The Bradleys urged women to take advantage of the service.

``The outreach programs are incredibly important,'' Ernestine Bradley said. ``They reach those who would not normally have the time or the resources. ``If found at an early stage, cancer is not a fatal disease.''

Ernestine Bradley said a brush with cancer is a very profound and moving event.

``Life goes on but much better than before - life is more precious,'' she said.

She said she was lucky to have her husband at her side and it brought them closer.

``We had a good marriage before, but cancer gave us a bond that neither of us thought could be forged,'' she said. ``This is the good side, if you have the strength to see it that way.''

About 325 to 425 women a month are seen at the Glendale Y's ENCOREplus program, said Laila Santos, program director. It is aimed at women who have little or no medical coverage, but no one is turned away.

She said since 1994, the program has screened 9,000 woman and found 78 breast cancer cases.

During a question and answer forum, Bill Bradley said such health services health services Managed care The benefits covered under a health contract  should be provided to the 44 million uninsured in this country, many of them working poor.

``That can only happen when we have national leadership,'' he said. ``Then any woman can get a pap smear, not just as a generous gift, but because it is a right in America.''
