Wysbeek described the piece as untruthful and distasteful. While he is a Republican, as the mailer states, Wysbeek said he went on the record against Prop. 209 and said he is not racist, as the mailer implies. ``The (mailer) is race-baiting and if that's the game we're going to play that's not right - we all belong to the same human race,'' said Wysbeek, who emigrated from Holland and whose father, a Jewish sympathizer, spent most of World War II in a concentration camp. ``If this is what our society is getting to then we've got a big, long battle ahead of us, because racism doesn't serve our community very well,'' said Wysbeek, 59. The mailer was delivered just days away from the City Council elections, which pit Wysbeek against four other candidates for three seats on the March 2 ballot. Councilwoman Joanne Baltierrez criticized MAPA. ``The allegations are totally untrue and if the voters check Doude's' voting record they will see that,'' said Baltierrez, who is not seeking re-election. ``Yes, Doude is a Republican, but I'm a Democrat and he's crossed lines and tried to work with me.'' |
