Although it's been nearly a quarter-century since Sylvia Goldberg attended summer camp, she still carries vivid memories of those bygone by·gone

``I went to summer camp in upstate New York Upstate New York is the region of New York State north of the core of the New York metropolitan area. It has a population of 7,121,911 out of New York State's total 18,976,457. Were it an independent state, it would be ranked 13th by population. , and I remember one activity - French braiding A French braid is a popular hairstyle. So when it it came time to enroll her 7-year-old son, Michael, in a summer camp, she sought out something entirely different. And she found it at Camp Gan Israel, a 20-year-old facility with an underlying theme of Jewish pride and culture.

In the Talmudic period, rabbis were primarily teachers and interpreters of the Torah.  Yisroel Levine, the camp director, said this is a pivotal year for the Agoura Hills facility, with the introduction of martial arts This is a list of martial arts, broken down by region and style. ``We've brought in real top-of-the-line specialty instructors that enhance the day-to-day activities - which already are beautiful because of the dedication of the staff members that are bringing in the Jewish atmosphere and pride,'' he said.

``In the past, they didn't have drama or martial arts, and now they even have a pool,'' she said.

Sarah not only enjoys taking a dip with fellow campers, but even likes a little change of scenery now and then.

``Tuesdays and Thursdays we go on field trips. Thursday we're going to a Dodgers game,'' she said.

More than 250 youngsters ages 3 to 13 kicked off the second session of the camp Monday morning.

Michael Goldberg, a seasoned camper of two years, was eager to get the session under way.

``I always have a good time - basketball, soccer, and learning Jewish songs,'' he said.
