The camera is designed to snap photos of cars that run red lights. After a 30-day grace period, police mail violators citations: $271 for running a red light.

``It may not be the intersection with the most accidents or the highest traffic flow, but it meets certain criteria,'' said Officer Denny Huddleston. ``It's not a minor intersection.''

At the Winnetka-Sherman Way intersection alone, authorities have recorded 16 crashes so far this year. Of that number, one was due to someone running a red light, authorities said. Twenty-three crashes were recorded there last year, four of which were due to someone running a red light.

In addition to the Valley, authorities will begin enforcement at three other intersections across the city: Third Street and Vermont Avenue Vermont Avenue is one of the longest running north/south streets in Los Angeles.
