The Camarillo High baseball team was given a list of goals before the season. The Scorpions have one item left.

``Next is a CIF championship,'' Camarillo senior Garrett Valencia said.

If the Scorpions continue to play with the efficiency they showed in Wednesday's 8-1 Pacific View League win against visiting Rio Mesa, the goal could be realized.

Camarillo pounded 12 hits, laid down bunts, got sacrifice flies and seemingly anything else it needed as it completed a three-game season sweep of the Spartans. Junior catcher Spencer Wyman went 3 for 3 with a double and a two-run home run; Mark Hensley and Eric Foster also had multiple hits. Valencia went the distance, giving up six hits and no earned runs, to improve to 6-3. The Camarillo defense backed him up with three double plays and several other momentum-shifting plays.

``I didn't have to strike people out,'' Valencia said. ``I just got them to hit the ball and my defense got outs. I used a lot of fastballs and tried to keep them off balance.

``It's been helping me a lot. I strike people out when I have to, but I've got a lot of confidence in my defense.''

The senior left-hander's only strikeout was in the first inning.

``Garrett seemed to have everything working today,'' Wyman said.

Pressure was taken off Valencia early when his team scored three runs on five hits off Rio Mesa right-hander Ernie Borjas (6-3) in the first inning. Hensley's leadoff double sparked another rally in the third. Wyman extended the Scorpions' lead to seven with his third home run of the season, a shot to right in the fifth inning.

``I've been really lucky with the group of kids I have,'' Camarillo coach Scott Cline said. ``It's nice to have athletes that swing the bat as much as these guys do. We don't take too many fastballs.''

The Scorpions reached base in each inning.

Camarillo (19-4, 9-1) had already clinched the inaugural Pacific View title, but found motivation in the chance to sweep the team that was picked to win the league. The Scorpions haven't lost a league game since dropping the opener to Hueneme. Last year's Channel League champion Spartans (17-8, 5-5) remain in the race for second.

``When we came into the league we were thinking, `Wow, it's Rio Mesa,' '' Valencia said. ``They were supposed to be the No. 1 team. It's nice to beat them three times.''

Rio Mesa's lone run came in the fourth. Anthony Sanchez led off with a single and took an extra base when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. He scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Greg Ramirez.
