CAMARILLO CREW; NEVARD LEADS TALENTED TRIO FOR EAST SQUAD.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Kathryn Nevard was trying to be diplomatic, but she just couldn't muster anything nice to say about the Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga
  • Mater Dei College, Western Australia
High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team.

Not after the Monarchs ousted Camarillo High from the Southern Section Division I semifinals for the second time in three years last Thursday. And certainly not after Nevard, who had pitched brilliantly for eight innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. So when someone asked Nevard what she thought about losing to Mater Dei . . . again, Nevard couldn't help herself.

``I don't like them,'' Nevard said, giggling a little.

Nevard, of course, had nothing to be ashamed of in the loss. Just as she was during her four-year career at Camarillo, she was in command, limiting the Monarchs to three singles and, in one stretch, retiring 13 batters in a row.

Her play in the loss capped off a dominant playoff run in which she had a perfect game and two shutouts.

Nevard ends her high school career Monday in the Daily News All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games , joining fellow West team pitchers Erin Voeltz (Westlake) and Amy Rosson (Calabasas).

, where she hopes to continue the success she had at Camarillo, using her assortment of pitches - including a crafty riseball - outstanding command and ball movement to overcome the longer distance between home plate and the pitcher's circle in college.

``I think she'll do just fine,'' said Camarillo coach Miki Mangan. ``I don't think the longer distance will affect her. Her ball moves so much and she puts it where it needs to be. Kathryn will do fine.''

Nevard has familiar company on the West team in Camarillo teammates Nikki Sutton (catcher) and Nicki Holt (shortstop). The trio has played on varsity together for three years, and Holt and Nevard played extensively as freshmen.

Nevard was 17-6 with a 0.83 ERA this year. Holt, an excellent defender at short, batted .400 with 20 runs scored and nine stolen bases. Holt hit .289 with 22 RBI RBI

It's a bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries.  moment for Mangan, who started coaching at Camarillo a year before Sutton, Holt and Nevard got there. Mangan watched them grow from freshman prospects to college players, and it's tough saying goodbye.

``I'm going to miss those girls,'' Mangan said. ``I mean, I'm losing my pitcher, shortstop and catcher. I'd say those are three important positions on a softball team.''

Sutton moves on to Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

``I'm excited,'' said Sutton, who switched from third base to catcher this year. ``When I first got here I mostly looked at it as having fun and playing high school softball. I just wanted to take it one year at a time. College was sort of in the back of my mind.''

Sutton's versatility will be a plus at Cal Poly. Having made the change from third to catcher, she can easily switch back. Camarillo needed Sutton to catch after Allie Taverner graduated. Sutton caught some as a youth player and is close to Nevard, so it was an easy transition.

``I've known (Nevard) a long time and I know her personality, what makes her mad and what to say to her to calm her down,'' Sutton said.

Holt, who impressed Mangan as a freshman with her size and athletic ability, continues to improve, having made the switch from a right-handed pitcher Noun 1. right-handed pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who throws with the right hand

Holt's future at Washington is bright.

``She's gotten better and better every year,'' Mangan said. ``And she's played on some really good travel teams over the years, playing in nationals in 120-degree weather and humidity. She knows what it's about.''
