CAMARILLO'S NEXT TEST: T.O. : STRONG PASSING GAME, DEFENSE PUT SCORPIONS IN LINE FOR TITLE.

Byline: Bill Schlotter Daily News Staff Writer

All season, the Camarillo High football team has battled for respect.

Its win over Newbury Park was a fluke fluke, parasitic flatworm of the trematoda class, related to the tapeworm. Instead of the cilia, external sense organs, and epidermis of the free-living flatworms, adult flukes have sucking disks with which they cling to their hosts and an external cuticle that , critics said. Its victory over Westlake was an upset.

But the team can put an end to all such talk tonight. If the eighth-ranked Scorpions (6-2, 5-0) can knock off third-ranked Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``This is for the league championship,'' said Thousand Oaks coach Mike Kelly This article is about the newspaper columnist. For the baseball player, see Mike Kelly (baseball).

In a league dominated by quarterbacks, Camarillo and Thousand Oaks have two of the best.

The Scorpions' Joe Borchard Joseph Edward Borchard (born November 25, 1978 in Panorama City, California), a 1997 graduate of Adolfo Camarillo High School in Camarillo, California was the 12th pick of the first round in the 2000 MLB amateur draft out of Stanford University by the Chicago White Sox.  (126 of 251, 1,844 yards, 19 TDs) has everything college scouts are looking for Looking for

``He's big, he's strong, he's got a terrific arm, he's got a quick release and he can run,'' Kelly said of the 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior. ``He's outstanding and he keeps getting better every week.''

Kelly's man is Scott McEwan, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder who has already committed to play at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

next season. And while McEwan (79 of 132, 1,591 yards, 12 TDs) doesn't have Borchard's yards, it is only because his team seeks to balance its attack with the running of Eleo Cuadra (130 carries, 636 yards).

``We're not putting the ball up 40 times a game,'' Kelly said. ``We react to whatever the defense is giving us.''

The Camarillo defense - which struggled early in the season - hasn't been giving anybody anything lately.

The Scorpions are particularly tough in their secondary, a unit led by defensive backs Andy Kroneberger, Justin Howe and Eugene Jackson

.

Kelly is also impressed with the play of linebacker Sam Choi and defensive lineman Charles Sandlin.

``No. 52 (Sandlin) is a real tough kid,'' Kelly said.

must mount a successful ground game.

``Our key is we need to run the ball,'' Kelly said.

Camarillo doesn't do a lot of running, averaging just 95 yards per game on the ground.

``If we have a weakness now, it's our running game,'' said Camarillo coach Carl Thompson Carl Thompson (Born in 1939) is a luthier specializing in the construction of high-quality custom bass guitars, based in Brooklyn, New York.

.

But with Borchard averaging 231 yards a game passing - 14.6 yards per completion - it hasn't mattered so far.

Borchard began the year with one legitimate receiver, wideout Mike Anger, who has an area-best 58 catches for 776 yards and 11 TDs.

Borchard has other options in Bryan Juell (19 catches, 204 yards), tight end Justin Denham (17 catches, 261 yards) and Justin Howe (16 catches, 355 yards).

Defending against Borchard's passes will be a solid Lancers secondary that includes brothers Josh and Joey Casillas and Steve Marx. But Kelly figures the key to stopping the Scorpions will be putting pressure on Borchard.

``The best pass defense is a pass rush,'' Kelly said. ``Nobody throws well off his back foot.''

Leading the defense will be middle linebacker Jud Southwell, whom Kelly figures is the best in the league at his position.

With both teams sporting potent offenses, Thompson figures the game will be decided by each team's defense.

``We both have to play good, solid defense and not make mistakes,'' he said. ``This game could be one of those that comes down to whoever makes a mistake loses.''

Both teams have a game remaining after tonight's contest. Thousand Oaks travels to playoff play·off also play-off

GAME OF THE WEEK

NO. 8 CAMARILLO (6-2, 5-0) AT NO. 3 THOUSAND OAKS (7-0-1, 5-0)

STRENGTHS

Camarillo:Quarterback Joe Borchard and receiver Mike Anger have quietly become the most prolific passing combination in the area. Borchard (1,844 yards) will likely go over the 2,000-yard mark for the season tonight. And Anger (58 catches) will likely break into the 60s in receptions. Borchard's toughness has been a key. Other teams knocked him down plenty in early games, but he always popped back up. And now, the Scorpions offensive line - led by Chris Mykleby (6-5, 320), Jeff Festerling (6-3, 260) and Mike McGrath Michael ("Mike") McGrath is Montana's current attorney general. He was elected in November 2000, and was unopposed for his second term in 2004. He is a member of the Montana Democratic Party. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force.  (6-2, 235) is beginning to play well. Kicker Kicker

Ryan Geisler has a 49-yard field goal to his credit and is a scoring threat inside the 35. Defensive back Andy Kroneberger is an all-league presence in the secondary.

Thousand Oaks: Quarterback Scott McEwan may not get to throw as much as he would like but has made the most of his chances, completing almost 60 percent. Favorite receiver Barrett Grindle (30 catches, 659 yards, 6 TDs) is an all-league candidate. So are running back Eleo Cuadra (636 yards, 15 TDs), middle linebacker Jud Southwell and wide receiver/defensive back Josh Casillas. WEAKNESSES

Camarillo: The lack of a running game could hurt the Scorpions, who rank fourth from last among area Southern Section teams in this department. Without some running, the Lancers will be keying heavily on Borchard. Some would say the Scorpions defense no longer belongs in the ``weakness'' category. It will have to prove it tonight.

Thousand Oaks: Defensive back Glenn Perrault is out with a broken hand. And the Lancers place-kicking has been erratic. Other than that, how many weaknesses can an undefeated team have?

KEY PLAYERS

Camarillo: QB Joe Borchard, WR Mike Anger, WR/DB Justin Howe, WR/DB Andy Kroneberger, DB Eugene Jackson, LB Sam Choi, OL Chris Mykleby, TE Justin Denham.

Thousand Oaks: QB Scott McEwan, WR Barrett Grindle, RB Eleo Cuadra, LB Jud Southwell, WR/DB Josh Casillas, DL/FB Ryan Tardif, TE Jeff Wyly.

OUTLOOK

Camarillo: If the Camarillo offensive line can keep the pressure off Borchard and give him time and room to work, the Scorpions are in the game. Borchard is truly a player who can carry a team. And the Scorpions defense must play its best game of the season to contain the talented and balanced Lancers offense. If those things happen, the Scorpions could surprise a lot of people by becoming league champions.

Thousand Oaks: With their balanced offense, tough defense, unbeaten record and impressive victories over Hart and Westlake to their credit, the Lancers have to be the favorite in this one. But then Newbury Park and Westlake went into their games with the Scorpions as favorites, too. And we all know what happened to them.
